I wake up feeling very warm and overall good. I soon realize the warmth is from Kageyama's hoodie that I still have on. I take it off and put it in my bag. I get ready for the day and head to the kitchen to eat breakfast with my mom.
"Happy birthday honey!" Wait, it's my birthday? How did I not remember? Have I really been that caught up in school and volleyball?
"Thanks Mom!" I say and hug her noticing that she made pancakes. My favorite.
"So, how does it feel to be 16?" She asks obviously more excited about my birthday than I am.
"Not much different really." I say honestly while shoveling pancakes in my mouth.
"Well then how did tryouts go?"
"Pretty good. I made the team but then the girls team kind of died so I tried out for the boys team and made it." I notice she hasn't said anything back and it's been about 20 seconds. I look up to see a look of pure shock on her face. "What?"
"Are you going to be ok playing against all of those boys?" She asks very concerned.
"I'll be fine Mom." I look at the time noticing I'm a little late so I finish my pancakes and head out the door. I run to the bus stop and make it just in time. I sit down next to Hinata again and we talk the whole way to school.
"It's really your birthday and you didn't tell me sooner?" He asks looking a little betrayed.
"I forgot!"
"How do you forget the one day a year that's all about you?"
"I don't know. I guess I was just caught up in everything that I didn't even keep track of the days."
"Ok well I'm going to make this birthday your best one yet!"
"Well thank you but that's not necessary." He sticks his fingers in his ears and keeps repeating 'la la la' over and over again like a 3-year-old. We get into first period and he makes it very apparent that it's my birthday to everyone. It's kind of embarrassing but at the same time, it's really sweet. He then takes me to the vending machine and lets me pick out whatever I want.
Kiyoko comes by our class to tell us that there's no practice today. I'm kind of disappointed but I guess there's nothing I can really do about it. Class starts again, and I can barely focus on anything the teachers are saying because I feel eyes on me the whole time. I turn around to see Kageyama staring straight into my soul. I realize I never gave him his hoodie back. After class, I take it out of my bag and hand it to him. He takes it and says a quick thank you before leaving. I notice that as he's walking down the hallway, he sniffs it. It's a little weird but I guess if my hoodie had a foreign scent on it, I'd smell it too.
I don't really feel like going straight home after school, so I sit down under a tree and take out my homework, phone, and earbuds. I listen to music as I'm doing my homework, hoping to get it done faster. I barely notice someone sit down next to me. I look over to see Kageyama looking at my work.
"Hi." I say hoping to find out what he's doing here.
"Hey, I was actually coming by to say happy birthday. So uh, happy birthday." He says with what looks like a smile on his face.
"Thank you Kageyama." He stays there for another minute. He looks a little awkward so I offer him one of my earbuds hoping to relax him. He takes it and we listen to music together for a little while before he speaks again.
"Do you think you could tutor me in math? I mean, I see how quickly you're working through those problems, and I need some help." This kid keeps surprising me everyday.
