In a flash of white light, three different Pokémon appeared from the Poké Balls.
From Barry's Poké Ball came out a monkey-like orange Pokémon with a flaming orange and yellow tail.
"Chimchar!" the Pokémon said excitedly.
A light blue penguin-like Pokemon with two white circles on its chest appeared from the Poké Ball that Melanie threw out.
"Piplup!" the Pokémon smiled proudly and puffed up its chest.
And from the Poké Ball that Amy threw came a small green Pokémon with a small black and brown shell and two green leaves on its head.
"Turtwig!" said the Pokémon, looking angrily at the Starly in front of it.
"Cool, a Chimchar!" said Barry.
"What a cute Piplup!" squealed Melanie.
"Wow, a Turtwig," Amy whispered with delight.
The three Starly flapped their wings at the same time, creating a humongous wind at them.
Amy, Melanie, and Barry covered their faces.
"We've got to fight back!" Amy yelled, taking control. "Turtwig, use Tackle!"
The Turtwig charged right at the Starly in front of it and slammed into it full force.
"Chimchar, use your Scratch attack!" Barry yelled.
The Chimchar ran up to its Starly, scratching the Pokémon on the face.
"Okay Piplup, use Pound!" commanded Melanie.
The Piplup ran up to the Starly and slapped it with its flippers.
All three of the Starlys quickly flew up into the air, swooped down, and tried to slam into the other Pokémon.
"Dodge!" Amy, Melanie, and Barry yelled at the same time.
The three Pokémon moved out of the way as fast as they could. The Piplup, however, didn't go fast enough and was hit. The Penguin Pokémon toppled over and landed right into the lake.
"Oh no, Piplup!" Melanie ran to the edge of the lake and searched the top of the water.
Piplup swam up to the surface. It glared at the Starly that had hit it. "Piplup, piplup!" it shouted angrily.
"Piplup, are you okay?" Melanie asked anxiously.
Piplup looked up at Melanie and nodded in reply. It jumped out of the water and landed on the tall grass. It ran up to the wild Starly again and pecked right at it.
Starly spooked, flying over Melanie's head and into the trees.
"Yeah, Piplup!" Melanie cheered. "Way to go!"
"Chimchar, use Ember!" shouted Barry.
Chimchar opened its mouth and a barrage of fire came out. It hit the wild Starly, which quickly got up, flew after the other Starly, and escaped into the trees.
"Great job, Chimchar," Barry said proudly.
Chimchar smiled up at Barry. "Chimchar!" it said.
"Way to go, Barry!" cheered Melanie.
"Turtwig, use Tackle again!" Amy yelled.
"Turtwig!" The tiny Pokémon rammed into the wild Starly once more.
"Starly!" screeched the wild Pokémon. It quickly flew over the lake and disappeared beyond the trees.
"Wow Amy, great job!" said Melanie.
"Yeah, you were awesome!" Barry agreed, giving Amy a high five.
Amy smiled. "Thanks, guys, you were great, too." She turned to the Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup. "But I think these guys deserve the praise more than anyone." Amy squatted down to the Pokémon's level. "You three did an awesome job. If it wasn't for you, I don't know what could've happened to us. You're awesome fighters."
"Turtwig!" said Turtwig, with a huge smile on its face. The leaves on its head twitched with delight.
"Chimchar!" Chimchar said happily.
"Pip piplup!" Piplup puffed up its chest with pride. It also smiled with unconstrained happiness.
"Okay, guys, let's get you back into your Poké Balls and back to that professor guy," said Melanie.
Amy, Melanie, and Barry held out the Pokémon's Poké Balls. In a flash of red light, Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup disappeared into their balls.
"You don't think those other two people will mind that we used their Pokémon, do you?" Barry asked.
Suddenly footsteps quickly came running. Amy, Melanie, and Barry turned around and saw Lucas coming their way.
"Excuse me," he said, "have you three seen a..."
Lucas looked behind Amy and noticed the briefcase. He sighed with relief. "Whew, you guys did find it. Man, the Professor would've gone ballistic if he had discovered that I might have lost it." Lucas picked up the briefcase. "Thanks a..." Lucas paused, noticing the Poké Balls in their hands.
"Wait...did you guys use the Pokémon in those Poké Balls?" Lucas asked.
Before they could reply, Lucas slapped his forehead. "Oh man, how's the Professor going to react to this?!"
Lucas quickly ran off and out of sight.
Amy raised an eyebrow. "What was that about?" she wondered.
"Who knows," said Melanie, shrugging. "Let's just get out of here and head for home."
The three friends started to leave Lake Verity. As Melanie and Barry left, Amy suddenly stopped in her tracks.
Amy turned around and looked towards the lake. She thought she had heard a strange noise coming from the lake. But there was nothing there.
Melanie quickly came back. "Yo, Amy! Let's go!"
Amy slowly turned around and faced Melanie. "Coming!"
As she left, Amy failed to notice the misty outline of a mysterious Pokémon above Lake Verity. As suddenly as it had appeared, it dove right into the water and out of sight.
"Kyouuuuun!"
