They Fell

Billions of brilliantly shining stars light the night sky far above the two small figures lying on lush green grass below; a brunet still discovering new stars, a blonde who has read all about them.

The brunet gasps softly.

"Armin, one fell," he whispers in awe.

The blonde doesn't bat an eye, watching the space where there was once a blazing light.

"Yeah... They do that sometimes."

He speaks in a hushed voice.

"It's kind of sad, Eren. Most of these shining stars died a long time ago; we're just too far away to notice.

...It must be lonely."

Eren's eyes widen and he turns his head to look at his friend.

He doesn't expect to see glittering, transparent streaks rolling down the other's cheeks.

Without thinking, the brunet takes the other's hand and intertwines their fingers.

The action is unexpected; it takes Armin off guard and glossy, crystal blue eyes meet crystal green.

"We won't be like that. I know it. We won't fall.

I know it."

The words spoken by a child years ago echo in the fading minds of two adolescent soldiers, ambushed and left to bleed while on look-out.

With tears in their eyes, they lay looking up at dead stars; their hands clasped tightly.

Minutes later, two of those brilliant lights above went out.
