Chapter 18

I sat at the table in the restaurant. I kept tapping my shoe on the table leg, waiting for Dave to arrive. Under the table, my hands fumbled with the napkin. I kept glancing around, wondering when he would arrive. I knew i was early. I did not want to be late and create a bad impression for myself. I took a shaky breath in. Ohmygod. I was so nervous.

“Miss Leward, I apologise for keeping you waiting,” I heard a male voice say.

Looking up, my eyes met familiar brown ones. I smiled. “I did not wait that long, anyway, Mr McOwan.”

He smiled and laid his napkin on his lap. “Do you mind if we ordered? I’m famished.”

“No, not at all,” I replied, picking up the menu with my trembling fingers. When i had laid the napkin on my lap, it was all crumpled up.

Dave called the waiter over to take our orders once we were ready. My heart was still thudding loudly. He, on the other hand, looked absolutely at ease. I was jealous of how calm he looked. Why can’t i be like that?

“So, tell me, Miss Leward, what would you like to ask me?” he asked, a friendly smile on his lips.

I immediately donned my professional mode and forced myself to relax. “I shall just go straight to the point then, if you don’t mind. What was the significance on choosing that particular location?”

He leaned forward and clasped his hands together. “I believe that the spot was perfect to attract a suitable number of tourists for the hotels. There are malls in every direction for the ease of the visitors. This could help boost the economy and my company since i do own half of the malls.”

Oh wow, when did Dave grow up? It was like i was talking to totally different person yet, it was the same guy. “Did you expect such a huge response after the opening of the hotel?”

“Yes,” he replied confidently. “You see, the hotel is not the usual kind. Other than being well situated, it is environmentally friendly. I also make sure the staffs are top notch. There is no place for second best in business. That’s what my father always says.”

I caught a glimpse of the young boy i knew before when he mentioned his father. The next question was a little more difficult for me to ask but i forced myself to remain a professional. “And, was the opening of this hotel your idea? Or was it your father’s?”

He leaned back, looking slightly insulted. “I’m very sure there are rumours flying about saying about how easy things are for me since my father has already made a name for himself. And, i’m just the son that takes over his business. But, i assure you, i make my own decisions. And this hotel, was my decision.”

I was impressed. He had grown up to be an amazing man. I was immensely proud of him and my affection towards him increased if that were possible. I was about to ask another question when the waiter arrived with our meals.

“Thank you,” Dave said, smiling politely.

“Thank you,” I said as well.

“There is a man who would like you to have this, ma’am,” the waiter informed me, passing a single lily to me with a small card.

I took it from him and looked at Dave who stared curiously. “I’m so sorry about this. I have no idea who could have possibly given this.”

“You seem to have an admirer, Miss Leward,” Dave said, one side of his lip lifting. “Don’t worry. You can open the card.”
