Hey guys!! This is a short story I wrote in my free time and I hope it is as good as it was in my mind. An important piece of information...this story will not have any continuation. This is how it was supposed to end. Enjoy!!

The thunderous roar of the engine made Marie duck inside the desk in fear of being found. It was the third day of the trials and it wouldn't be long before the winner would be announced. Today was uneventful but this didn't reassure Marie as she knew that in a few days' time, all of her friends in the trials would most likely be dead.
She still wished that the trials would end but knew that the only way to terminate them was to win them. She slowly stood up from inside the desk and looked around, when she saw it.
There, in front of her laid the body of her best friend, Jessica Williams pooled in her own blood with numerous bullet holes covering her. Her face was clear of bullet holes that helped Marie recognize her, but she didn't dare glance below her neck again. Her body was a mess of blood and skin, with her arms and legs tilted at odd angles. The sight was revolting and made Marie nauseous, something she often felt after she entered the trials.
Marie slowly backed away in fear when the sight finally registered in her brain. She knew the hunters would soon come and fish the body out of the arena. This would be the last time Marie would see her best friend and this made her feel even more dejected. Marie hastily turned and dashed through the forest outside the building when she heard the sound of gunshots. The hunters were close and would soon reach the building.
Tears were streaming down her face as she ran as fast as she could in order to get away from the hunters. Her vision soon became blurry making it hard to see. Suddenly, she tripped on a branch and started sliding down directly into a river, completely drenching herself.
About an hour of wandering aimlessly, Marie reached the tent she made with her friends for shelter. Only Brad and Liz were left, out of all her friends. When she went inside, they both looked up but didn't say anything because Marie's sorrowful expression and the dried tears on her face were enough for the pair to understand that something bad had happed.
Marie knew she had to break the news to her friends, and so she slowly stood up, washed her face, and composed herself. Brad and Liz saw her walk over to them so they stayed silent and waited for her to speak.
After a few minutes of silence, Marie finally spoke. "Jessica is dead," she said, making her friends shell shocked. Marie saw their faces and thought 'Huh? This is what I must have looked like when I saw Jessica, if not worse'.
Marie tried feeling sadness for her friend, but she couldn't make herself feel anything, she felt empty, void of any emotion whatsoever and this scared her.
Marie was an emotional and sensitive girl who would get hurt or become happy for the smallest of things but the pent up emotions of seeing many of her closest friends die took a toll on her. Now, she was a zombie, a body with no soul; she was living but she was dead on the inside.
Liz and Brad started crying as soon as the accepted the fact that their dear friend had died. Soon they both were sobbing messes but all Marie could do was wait and let them get better on their own since she couldn't even feel empathy for them.
Marie left her friends inside the tent and ran outside after taking a knife with her. She knew what she had to do and was determined to complete her plan alone. Soon she spotted a hunter wandering alone in the forest. 'Just what I needed' she thought as she slowly and silently made her way towards him.
Creeping up behind him, she knew she was at an advantage even though he had a gun. Once she reached near him, she stabbed him on the back making him turn around in shock. Marie did not hesitate and stabbed him a second time making him fall on the ground. His limb body with blood seeping out of the wounds she inflicted made her feel nothing but satisfaction.
Marie knew that she was not playing fair but that did not make her feel remorseful since she knew Jessica and her friends were also killed mercilessly. Marie knew that she was going crazy but she was hell-bent on winning the trials. She knew that if she wins the trials by killing all the hunters in the arena, the trials would stop.
Marie had one goal and one goal only, to avenge all of her friends' deaths and stop the trials once and for all.
