Chapter Ten

Chewing on the plastic straw, I look towards Kade and smile. The black plastic cocktail straw pokes into the side of my cheek. There is a slight discomfort but that doesn't stop me from chewing on it.

The minute the elevator doors ping open, I shuffle out to put some space between the two of us.

"Do you think they'll mind?" I look at the empty glass and frown. Kade wanted to leave the bar because he was afraid of what would happen if I stayed any longer with Jenna. I insisted on finishing my drink, which lead to Kade taking it with us.

"Have you had dinner, Lydia?" asks Kade.

"Uh, no?" I shake my head.

Dinner was the last thing on my mind when Jenna and I decided to go for drinks. We were served a small lunch at the spar, but that feels like forever ago. I had to eat a stupid salad while Jenna chomped down a large bowl of pasta – talk about unfair! But hey, this job can't be completely perfect.

"Okay, I'll cook you something." Before Kade walks away, he takes the glass from my hand. I stand before him with a straw dangling out of my mouth. So smooth Lydia.

"Another drink?" he offers.

I quickly grab the straw and smile. "Are you trying to get me drunk?"

"Aren't you already drunk?"

"Kade, I'm – " As I step forwards, I lose my balance and trip forwards. I manage to stand straight before I end up sprawled along the ground. "Water is fine."

I put my straw into the glass before walking off with Kade following behind. When I get to the kitchen, I take a seat by the sink while Kade busies himself with grabbing food and pans. He chucks the chicken in the pan with a sauce. It simmers on the stove while he grabs a glass of water for me.

"Are you having a drink?" I ask.

"Yes." Kade rummages through the pantry before returning with a bottle of whisky. He pours himself a large glass and then returns to cooking. For someone with his credentials and word load, I'd have expected a private chief or premade meals in the fridge. I like the surprise.

"All to your liking?"

Shaking my head, I look over to see Kade's chicken. The smell wafts past me which makes my stomach groan with hunger.

"Yes, it sure is."

Kade takes a swig of his drink and then begins chopping vegetables to accompany the chicken. Twenty minutes later, Kade places the dish in front of me. The food is beautiful organised on the plate, but with my spinning head, I don't get the chance to fully appreciate it. I use my fork to stab the vegetables to eat.

"Did you want some help?" asks Kade.

"Nah, I've got this."

The combination of flavours is beautiful but I can't find the words to compliment his food. I'm sure he realises it too, but that doesn't stop Kade from asking questions.
