Chapter 9: Envy

Jack Frost

The cold wind became stronger and colder as the broom started flying at the great speed, that the sun waking up in the East couldn't even release its own heat. But that doesn't bother me at all since I'm a winter spirit.

I moved out of my seat and stood upon it, just to see the incredible view of the sky that was once above us. Giant white clouds are forming at a distance, covering the whole sky of warmth with its purity. The sun in front of us started to rise, even more, growing bigger than before.

"This is my favorite one, the peak!" Befanny yelled, in which we turned around to see her, as a smile plastered in her face, full of joy and excitement. I couldn't help but to smile at her cheerful attitude.

Then, she pulled a wooden lever in front of her with great force. I raised my eyebrow, curious about what was gonna happen after pulling it. But suddenly, I felt the floor below suddenly fell away from my feet, then followed by my own body.

"No no no no no!!" Bunny said as he shouted along with our drop from the high skies to the unseen ground far below. The unexpected fall gave me chills that shiver my whole body, but at the same time, I found it amazing to experience this kind of feeling for a while.

I got used to flying with the wind that I didn't have that sensation of getting thrilled before, but now, I feel it once more because of this strange vehicle.

"Yeah!" Befanny yelled as she too is having fun with the drop that she just activated earlier. I turned to look at her and saw her smile. It was even more beautiful right now than before.

She turned to look at me, and our eyes met unexpectedly. I was about to avert my eyes on her, but somehow, I couldn't. It feels like there's a strange feeling in my heart that I couldn't be able to remove and I am always feeling that every time I see her, and somehow, I wanted more of it.

Then, she gave me a smile of warmth, didn't even bothered by my strange actions towards her. My cheeks flushed at her beauty, and that's the time that I couldn't be able to breathe.

The drop stopped and the broom started to fly again, but now at a lower level. I can see the large area of woods that we struggled to walk before, and now, we finally stood above it. The cold breeze started to be calm and the thrill that we just felt earlier was no more. I'm not fond of silence at all, but I think it's better to have time to breathe some fresh air.

I turned at my back to see Bunny that was almost lifeless after the trip, and Sandy that was just tried to heal him with his Dreamsand. I couldn't help but chuckle at what happened to him and went back in staring at the sunrise in front.

"It's been a while since I've been away like this," Befanny said, still not removing the sincere smile on her face.

"You're always going out every year right?" I asked to confirm as I tilted my head.

"Yeah... but usually, I'm just staying in my lair." She answered with a different smile right now. It was a smile of warmth and joy, it was sad and pitiful. It's like she was making fun of herself for not going out from her lair that often.

"The Man in the Moon didn't choose me at all to be honest." She said that made my eyes widened out of shock. I listened eagerly at her issue as confusion filled my mind."It was Ombric that declared me as a guardian, the Guardian of Purity. But... the other guardians disagreed, even the MiM. They said I wasn't qualified at all."

"I'm an untitled Guardian, an unofficial, fake one. I was actually envious when he chose you as a Guardian instead of me." She added, now giving me more sad smiles at me. I couldn't help but have the feeling that wanted to embrace her and remove all of her sadness away. But unfortunately, I couldn't do that. "It's like I'm just being ignored by the man above."

"N-No. Don't say it like that." I defended with a loud voice, so she turned around to me in surprise. Her hazel brown eyes became golden as the sun reflected on them.

I remembered the time that I hated to become one of the Guardians. I didn't know that there will be someone that wanted to become one, and I didn't even think of their feelings.

"I'm sure the time will come that you can become a Guardian," I said, giving her more hope. "Trust me."

After hearing that from me, she gave me a warm and sincere smile, bringing back her joy and hope of being one of the Guardians. I couldn't help but smile too. And at this time, I swore to protect her smile, till now and forever.

Narration

Meanwhile, in the North Pole, Santa stomped his feet in every step that he takes as he walked side by side in his hall, playing with his white long beard using his fingers. His eyebrows furrowed as his eyes looked on the floor below.

In a distance, Tooth Fairy can be seen floating in the air, as her wings flapped at an incredible speed, like that of a hummingbird. Her servant fairies kept flying around her, as she kept giving them orders.

"There must be something wrong." He muttered, but loud enough for the fairy to hear what he said. Tooth stopped from her business as a Guardian and looked at the Russian man that was walking in circles. "He can't be him!"

"North, you can't deny it." She said in her calm sweet voice, opposing what he said. "He's him."

"It couldn't be..." He whispered once more, not listening to what she said earlier, couldn't accept what he just learned and what he just concluded.

All they know is that he disappeared a long time ago, gone at being a Guardian, and now lived as a normal human somewhere in the Earth. But they didn't expect that they will meet him again.

Then, suddenly, something caught his attention. He raised his head to the Globe of Belief, and there, he saw something that he didn't expect to come. On top of the globe was a pile of black sand crawling and spreading its own to the sphere.

North's eyes widened, as he saw the darkness started wrapping all around the globe, and the wind around them became violent than before, pulling out papers and toys towards it. Tooth, the fairies, the elves, and the yetis also witnessed this madness occurring in front of them.

"The black sand..." He whispered, stunned as the sand started flying around the globe like a tornado, grabbing everything on site. "...it's back..."
