"We're invited for lunch this Sunday."
"Great!"
"At the Flynn's."
"Oh."
I hadn't discussed with my das what had happened with Noah. To be fair, I had barely discussed it with anyone. I didn't know what he knew from this contacts with the Flynns, especially Sara and James. I was behaving like a very mature yound adult: burying my head in the sand, hoping it would go away without any of us ever discussing it. But I had spent enough time with Marco to want to fix my naturally run-away behavior.
"Dad, Noah and I aren't together anymore."
"I see."
I knew he was happy about it even though he would never show it or even hint at it.
"So I don't think I can go for lunch at the Flynns."
"Why not? Are you not on good terms with Lee?"
"Yes but..."
"And with Sara?"
"Yeah bu..."
"And isn't Noah in Boston?"
"I think so..."
"What's the matter then?"
He had just masterfully tricked me. I couldn't say I had plans, which would have been a lie, after this conversation. I had to simply accept my defeat and go along at the dinner. I felt like a fraud, like nothing would ever be the same because of my relationship with Noah. My dad could see how embarrassed I still was.
"What's your plan here? Never go the Flynn again? Only hang out with Lee and avoid the whole family? We've been friends with the Flynns for literaly decades."
"It's just... embarrassing."
"Yeah. And for all of us, trust me. That Thanksgiving diner you've put me through? I wish to never live that again in my life. But that's part of being an adult. You suck it up and you make it work because there's not just you involved. It will be awkward, this time and the next, and maybe still the next. But it'll become less and less embarrassing. The Flynns are our friends. That's bigger that you and Noah, honey."
When you're young, you're sometimes so sure you know more than your parents. This was definitively not one of these moments. I knew my dad was right. Yet, there was a difference between knowing that he told the truth and accepting it. My hands were playing with my pillow as I sat there, silent.
"I AM BORED!!!!!"
My dad and I were startled by Brad jumping in my room and quickly on my bed. My dad quickly grabbed and made it turn around the room in the air.
"Somebody saves this boy! He is bored, you hear me? BO-RED!"
Dad put Brad back on the floor were he started jumping with all the excitement and joy of an 8 year-old boy.
"I declare today... family day!"
"Yes! Let's go watch a movie!" said Brad.
"Well I was supposed to spend time with Lee..."
"Come on Elle! The last Avengers is on now!"
"Please God not another superhero movie... They're all the same."
Brad looked at me as if I had personally insulted him.
"How can you say that?"
I laughed and went to tickle him but he ran away from my grasp.
