It’s been over two years since he last stepped foot into his university corridor.
Staring up at the open set gate of his university, Jungkook is suddenly unable to breathe past the thick bundle of nerves currently clogging up his throat. His luggage is patiently sat by his side and his books bag is weighing down his shoulders, but Jungkook just can’t seem to pick up his feet and move. Chewing on his bottom lip, jungkook takes a second to think – he doesn’t remember his heart pounding like this even during his first soccer match. In fact, there’s only one other instance that could possibly match up to this, but thinking about that will likely make things worse, so Jungkook takes a deep breath and walks inside.
His father had fallen drastically ill just before Jungkook was about to start his fifth year at Seoul national university. Despite his parents insistence that it wasn’t necessary, Jungkook decided to put his time at school on hold in favour of spending valuable time with them. It’s a decision he definitely would’ve regretted not making – his father passed away over the summer, and all the memories they had created over the last couple of years comforted Jungkook through the grieving process.
Amidst all of that, he miraculously managed to stay on top of his studies, so much so that he was able to skip a whole year and go straight into his final year. Going back to school would bring a sense of normalcy back into his life, his mom had said, and Jungkook found himself agreeing to re-enrol back at university. The small pleased smile that had graced his mother’s face is an image Jungkook still clings to during the darkest hours of nights.
It’s early, soft sunlight filtering through the open hallway and the halls remain quiet, Jungkook made his way to the university dormitories. Students will still deeply asleep for another half n hour or so. Somehow, Jungkook remembers how to return to the Office room, easily navigating his way back to the Dorms incharge office as though he had never left.
When he’s gazing up at her It’s clear that she recognises him, and judging from the pitying look on her face, she somehow also knows about his recent loss. He wants to get out of there as early as possible. They exchange simple greetings. She gives his new dorm keys. Jungkook knows what's she's about to say when he saw her opening her mouth to say something. He panics and immediately cut her off saying “Well,” he starts, picking his luggage up from floor watching her close her mouth in akin to understanding. “I’ll be off now. Have good day–”
“Jungkook?”
Oh, and there goes his heart again, rattling desperately within the confines of his ribcage. Even the Dorm incharge lady nods her head knowingly after hearing him take a breath audibly, a faint wash of pink rising up his pale cheeks.
“Is that you?”
Jungkook licks his lips, the dryness of his tongue catching on the swell of his lower lip.
“Yeah,” he manages. “Hey, Taehyung.”
They’re on opposite ends of the hallway as they make way to each other. Well jungkook just took a few steps because Taehyung practically sprinted towards him.
“Wow, it’s been a while, huh?” Amazement is evident on Taehyung’s face, brought to life by those painfully handsome features.
Over the years, they had kept in contact with each other through kokoa chat– some calls lasted for few hours– but this is the first time they have laid eyes on each other directly ever since the day Jungkook left.
Taehyung’s hair has grown, and he changed his hair colour again, Jungkook notes. His golden Snowy strands brush past his thick black eyebrows and oh my god is that a mullet? and Jungkook wonders if they’re as soft as he remembers. He’s got a tan too his Golden hair perfectly fits his honeyed skin, and Jungkook thinks he’s the beautiful and handsome man he's ever seen.
“I-It really has. Y-You look g-g-good,” he says, trying not to wince at the unknown reason of his stuttering. Behind him, the incharge lady lets out a dreamy sigh in agreement.
“So do you, Kook.” Taehyung smiles one his boxy smile and scratches at the back of his neck, cheeks tinged pink and eyes bright. “You’ve grown, ah, a lot. Are you almost as tall as me now?”
Jungkook can’t help but lean in ever-so-slightly to see the hight difference not just to let the freshness of Taehyung’s aftershave fill his senses. No. Obviously not. But The familiar scent feels like home.
What the hell Jungkook. Get a grip on yourself. He mentally scolded himself.
“Still a little shorter, it seems,” he answers, looking up at the only person in this entire University if not the universe he’d be willing to die for. At that, Taehyung breaks out into a smile and pulls Jungkook into his arms, a large hand splayed out over the small of Jungkook’s back.
“It’s really nice to have you back,” Taehyung says. Jungkook, with his cheek pressed against the warm curve of Taehyung’s neck, can almost feel the steady thud thud thud of his heart. And he's afraid Taehyung would notice his Rapidly beating heart. But he wants to stay in that moment a little longer.
“It’s nice to be back,” he replies.
The hug ends way too soon for Jungkook's Liking, but over the recent years, he has come to realise that he can’t always get what he wants.
“I didn’t think you’d arrive this early.”
“Yeah, wanted to get in before the halls are too busy” Jungkook explains. “ I just took my keys and about to head to my dorm when you spotted me. But what are you doing outside this early? As long as I remember you'll flip out a whole school when someone tries to wake you up at this early morning" He questioned raising his eyebrows.
Taehyung hums. His deep voice sending a shiver down jungkook's spine. "As you know I'm a student council president now. All my early morning privileges are gone now. I need to check all this rowdy students are safe and secure in dormitories or just laying on the hallways floor with hangover or not" He finishes with a heavy sigh. Jungkook remembers taehyung saying in their late night call sessions that this president thing is draining all his energy and stressing him out so much. Jungkook feels bad seeing the distress in taehyung's sharp brown ocean deep eyes.
"Oh poor you" Someone says behind them making jungkook jump a little.
Oh yeah the incharge lady is here too. Taehyung turns to smile at the Lady – unsurprisingly, she swoons, and Jungkook finds himself empathising with her. Because fuck. With that single smile a million butterflies erupted in his tummy. He blames the food he ate yesterday night.
“Good morning Mrs. Yang, looking beautiful as always " Taehyung says and starts dragging Jungkook to the exit.
Jungkook swore he heard a squeal.
