We were a happy family of five living in a humble rental apartment in the city. My mother was the type of woman that would let anyone be what they want to be. My dad was the kind of man who doesn't know a thing about his family but still works hard for them. He was so busy that he didn't know any of our birthdays, what school we were in, and what course I was taking in campus.
Though we lived from hand to mouth,we were happy. I was the modern type city girl that was all about the internet, fashion and friends. My social life was perfect,my best friend Jess and my boyfriend Leo were my two favourite people in the world.
My younger sister Kagz always made sure life was difficult for me in all aspects.'Why can't we be the type of siblings who love each other?' I loathed being around her or any of her stuff so I made sure to stay as far away as possible from her because drama was clearly her thing and I wasn't so good at it.
Caleb,my younger brother was the joy of the family considering the fact that the age gap between her and my sister was ten years. As we would expect,he was really pampered as the only male child in the house. Living with grown ups, he was a mature kid who didn't fancy playing with other kids. He preferred sitting in the house all day watching movies. He loved me more than my bitching sister and that was enough for me as it meant that my sister was the problem and not me. My heart melted the day I saw his phone password was my name.
We lived happily until the Corona virus pandemic hit the world and my dad was laid off from work. Having no income, there was no way he could afford to sustain us in the city. Putting food on the table was becoming hard for him everyday and the house rent was impossible to raise without a job so we were forced to move in the countryside where my dad was building a retirement house. When we moved in, the house was incomplete and not really that habitable, but it was peaceful as no one was knocking on the door everyday to ask for rent.
Leaving Jess and Leo behind was the hardest part of moving for me. Jess was really mad when I told her we were moving that she didn't talk to me for three straight days. Leo asked questions like how he was going to get some when we were far apart and how we were going to handle the long distance thing. I assured them that I would keep in touch no matter the distance.
All my optimism got squashed when I got to this goddamn place. There was no cell reception and I couldn't even access the internet. I immediately realized that this was the death of my Instagram and all social media platforms. A social butterfly like me had just been caged. After mourning all my Instagram followers, I also realized that it was the end for me and Leo. He was one promiscuous son of a bitch that found it hard to stay loyal to one girl and would take this opportunity to do other girls with the excuse that I was not around. Right then and there I decided that he was not good enough for me and that I deserved better.
I had never been so enlightened in my life and I felt like a new version of myself. 'I mean how did I even put up with his shit for that long?' I was going to find a place with good reception to call him and end things before he did just to salvage the ego I had left in me, when Suyianka had almost killed me with his arrow the first day we met. Apart from almost dying from an arrow, I had also found out that the only place with cell reception was at the top of a nearby hill.
We were still very close with Jess no matter the distance and so my life revolved around this hell hole(mostly at the top of that hill) and Jess. We would talk for hours on phone and she would update me on what was happening out there where there was civilization. She even agreed to manage my social media accounts for me and that was all I could ever ask for.
My little brother Caleb took to the new place like a duck in water and that was great considering the fact that there was no electricity for him to watch movies all day. He adopted new hobbies like hunting down birds and going to the river to collect rocks. My bitching sister on the other hand I couldn't tell if she was comfortable or not but I didn't bother asking to avoid the drama.
We were trying to adapt to the new place until the raid took place and here I was lying in this place with herbs on my thigh. 'How the mighty fall,' I thought.
