Rebecca was on her way home to Tennessee when, late in the evening, around 9, she decided to stop in a café in Mississippi. She pushed open the door of Mary’s Café and made her way into the small, warm café. As she sat down, she noticed the couple sitting across the way from her arguing. This led her into a frightful flashback of her childhood where she, at eight years old, witnessed her parents arguing. She shook her head, trying to the rid herself of the memory as she scanned the menu.

“Can I take your order Miss?” Asked a deep voice.

Rebecca looked up, coming face to face with a blonde waiter.

“Can I take your order?” He repeated.

Rebecca nodded. “I’ll have a Caesar salad and a bottle of water please.”

The waiter nodded and smiled as he left the table.

When her food came back, Rebecca and the waiter were the only ones in the café.

The waiter brought out a tray carrying two salads and two bottles of water.

“Mind if I join you?” Asked the waiter.

Rebecca shook her head. “Please. Sit down.”

The waiter smiled. “I’m Matt. Matt Williams.” He said, holding out a hand.

Rebecca smiled and shook his hand. “Rebecca Craig.”

Matt smiled. “Nice to meet you Rebecca.”

Rebecca smiled and began to eat her salad.

“So where are you from?” Matt asked, digging in to his salad.

“Tennessee. I’m on my way home actually.” Rebecca said.

Matt nodded. “I’m from Tennessee. I moved up here when I turned eighteen.”

Rebecca nodded. “When I was younger I always wanted to go to New York.”

“Don’t you still want to?” Matt asked.

Rebecca shook her head.

“Why not?” Matt asked.

“When I was eight my dad went there for a month. Everything was perfect before he left. But when he got back, he and my mum started arguing. Two months later, they got divorced. And I never saw him again.”

Matt nodded. “That’s sad.”

Rebecca nodded. “It is. I miss my dad sometimes.”

“How many years has it been since he left?”

“Twelve.” Rebecca replied.

Matt smiled. “So you’re twenty?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Me too.” Matt said.

Rebecca smiled.

“So Miss Craig, if you don’t mind my asking, what brings you to Mississippi?”

“I was visiting my Godmother and my best friend in Louisiana. My best friend Samantha moved there two years ago and she happens to live right next door to my Godmother Katherine.”

Matt smiled. “And you decided to drive the whole way home?”

Rebecca nodded. “I prefer to drive. It gives me time to think.”

Matt smiled. “That’s nice. My teacher from fifth grade always used to tell our class something similar. She said she’d never flown in her life because being on a plane-”
