Chapter One

Perfectly at ease, I laid back against the lush green grass of the enclosed forest. Forbidden to all students I found that I could not help myself but to break this one rule. As i took a deep breath, i inhaled the sweet aroma of the wild orchids that had managed to  grow on the large oak trees. The gentle cool breeze that was always able to distract me from the pressure of reality.

“Yes!” I said smiling like a fool and rolling around in the cool grass. Exams were finally finished and I was glad to be rid of it. I settled myself and gazed towards the trees. I closed my eyes as i became even more relaxed. The sounds of the leaves rustling against the wind was the usual melody. A loud rustle from a nearby shrub startled me, and I suddenly rose up alert.

Scanning the area, I saw nothing suspicious. Then a shadow emerging from the shrub  revealed a small rabbit. Relieved I turned my attention towards the rabbit that was staring at me with frightened red eyes. I took out some biscuit from my bag and placed it as close as I could to the rabbit without frightening it more. I stood afar watching it slowly nibble away the biscuit when I caught a glimpse of the time.

“Sorry bugs, I’m late!” I said grabbing my things and running back towards the school’s boundary.

Cassie gave me a stern look as I came towards the table smiling apologetically.

“Where were you?” She asked, already knowing  the answer.

“No matter! I am here now.”

“You know you’re not allowed there, one of these days I swear you’ll get caught.”

“Relax, no one will find out. I am always careful.” She gave me another look, shook her head and knew that she would not get me to stop so easily.

“Back to more important matters, the dance is this weekend and I hope everyone already has their dresses.” Kady said.

“And don’t forget about boyfriends!” her twin Kim added.

“We don’t need boyfriends to have fun.”

“Maybe you don’t Emily, but we do!”

“No way, I agree with Em. We don’t need those dumb guys to make us happy.” Cassie said.

“I doubt, you, of all people would remain single. From what rumors say, Jason has his eye on you.”

“Yeah really,” Cassie said sarcastically, “then why hasn’t he shown himself to me. Be careful where you get your gossip from.” The waiter brought a small envelope and handed it to me, it had the school’s seal on it.

“Maybe he is waiting for the right time. I mean you did just break up with your ex, he must not want to seem too anxious.”

“Well he hasn’t gotten much time, I’m not getting younger!”

“Speaking of that,” I interrupted, “I think Jason has just sent us an invitation to dine with him.”

“What?!” the girls said simultaneously.

“It says here that Mr. Knightly has invited us to dine with him and his friends, tonight at eight and as a tribute to the evening we are to dress in white.”

“Is that all the letter said?” asked Kady.

“Yes.”

“Let me see it.” Kim said taking the letter from my hand. “Oh my God! It is true, and his seal is even in the back here. I got to go, I need to prepare.”

“It isn’t till eight!”

“Duh, that leaves only two hours to get ready.”

“Jeez, Kim this isn’t prom!”
