The doorbell wakes me up the next morning. I look at the clock and see it's 4.30am.
"Go away," I mumble, pulling the blankets over my head.
Just as I'm drifting to sleep again, a tapping on my window jerks me wide awake again.
I get out of bed and go over to the window, crossing my arms over my chest.
A dark shape pops up and I scream, stumbling backwards.
"Kelly, it's Corey! Open the damn window before I break my neck!"
Recollecting myself, I go and open the window so he can climb in.
"Why don't you just use the door like a normal person?"
"I tried. I rang the bell heaps and you didn't answer, so I had to climb up onto the balcony and all the way across to your room," he says, pulling the window shut.
"That was you? Sorry! I was sleeping..." I say, sitting on the edge of my bed.
"I figured," he says, sitting next to me. "I know it's early, and that last night you said you were alright, but I had to come make sure. I don't trust that guy."
"You're really sweet," I say, entwining my arm with his and cuddling up to him. "But I'm okay, seriously. Although there's something else I should tell you, if you promise not to overreact."
"What is it? You know you can tell me anything."
"Well, I sort of told him I'd meet him at the Coffee Hut today. That's what made him leave."
He takes a deep breath in and shuts his eyes.
"How the hell do you manage to get yourself into these situations?" he asks rhetorically, clenching his jaw.
"Corey," I whisper, putting my hand on the side of his face and waiting until he opens his eyes. "I hate this too, but I don't have much of a choice right now, okay?"
"I'm sorry. I just can't wait for that jerk to leave town. Although I do sort of feel bad for whichever girl he goes after next."
I look down and bite my lip.
"What? Kelly, please, you're killing me here. If there's anything you know that I don't you have to tell me. How else can I protect you?"
I take a deep breath and go over to the window, looking down over the front yard.
"Well, he did say something...about the girl he's going after next," I whisper, cupping my elbows. "He wants to get back together with me."
"What? That's why he came over last night? To get back with you?" he yells, coming over to wrap his arms around my waist.
"Apparently. He said he was sorry and that he's changed."
"And what did you say?"
Did I actually hear fear in his voice? And sadness? The way he said those five words...it was like I was going away and never coming back again. Like I'd leave him. Like I'd go back to Alex.
"I told him I didn't want him anymore. He didn't like that very much. Wanted to know why. He asked me if I'd met someone else.' I whisper the last part.
"What did you tell him?" he whispers back.
"I said I wasn't seeing anybody. He said that he'd only leave if I had coffee with him. And if I considered getting back together with him."
I turn from the window and put my hands around his neck, resting my head on his chest.
"I'm sorry," I murmur, tears in my eyes.
"You've got nothing to be sorry for," he says, kissing the top of my head.
"Well, in case you haven't noticed, I sort of start all the trouble around here," I say, smiling.
"Oh, don't worry, I've noticed," he says, laughing.
I pull back a little, looking him in the eyes.
"So you're not mad at me?"
"It was never you I was mad at, Kel."
I kiss him lightly before yawning massively.
"I think it's time for someone to go back to bed," he says, grinning.
"Will you stay?" I ask with a frown.
"If you want me to."
I grab his hand and drag him over to my single bed, where I push him down. He gets comfortable, putting his hands behind his head. I go around to the other side and get under the covers where I snuggle up to him, resting my hand on his chest. He puts arm around me and kisses the top of my head.
"Sleep well," he says.
"You too," I say, kissing him lightly.
Surprising me, he puts his other hand on my face and deepens the kiss. I slowly roll on top of him, tangling my fingers in his hair. He puts his hands on my waist, pulling me closer, but it's still not close enough for me. I move my hands down his face, then down his neck, until I find the top button of his shirt, which I undo. I undo the rest of the buttons and pull his shirt away from his chest, though I can't take it off completely because he won't take his hands off my waist. I pull away so I can breathe, and he starts kissing down my neck and shoulders. I pull his mouth back up to mine, and he takes his hands off my waist to pull my shirt off. I move my hands down his chest, unbuttoning his jeans.
"Baby, wait," he breathes, capturing my wrists in his hands.
"What is it?" I breathe back, kissing his neck.
"Baby, we have to stop."
"Mmhmm," I agree, still nibbling on his neck
"Baby, I'm serious. We have to stop."
I pull back, looking at him with a pout on my face.
"Fine," I say, rolling off him and facing the closet.
I admit I was a little hurt. I didn't expect to be rejected like that, I guess.
"Aw, baby, don't be like that," he says, trying to roll me to face him.
"Don't worry about it," I mumble into the pillow. "I get it."
"Kelly. I want to, believe me. I'm doing this for you. I heard you that day you told Alex that you wanted to save yourself," he says, kissing my shoulder.
I roll over to face him. I don't say anything; I just kiss him lightly, push his shoulder down and, lying down with my head on his chest, i close my eyes.
