                                                                 Haymitch's POV

                                                                      Chapter 1

It is the morning of the reaping; I get to learn who I will be the mentor of. Since I am the only survivor from District 12, I must mentor both of them, along with the not so fun help of Effie.

It takes me forever to get out of bed, my hangover is so terrible. I drag myself out of bed, minutes before the reaping will begin. I put on some pants, and walk to the reaping. The girls are first. Primrose, that little girl, I'll have to mentor her!! Wait, who's that, her sister Katniss, volunteering!! Oh, joy. Now the boys, there are plenty of strong men I could easily mentor. She calls out the baker's boy, Peeta. I have a brat, and a baker to get sponsors for, this'll be fun.

When I meet them on the train, I instantly can tell Peeta likes Katniss.

"Don't like to make a good first impression?" I laugh in a half drunk attitude.

Nobody speaks, so I just start to eat, and drink some of my prized alcohol. When dinner is over, we all go and watch the reapings, all of them, by the time we got to District 12, I was about to die of boredom. Before I went to bed, I spotted Peeta wandering around.

            "Can't sleep," I slur out.

            He runs over to me.

"I need to make a deal with you," he says.

            "What?" I murmur.

"I need you to keep Katniss alive in the games," he explains.

"On one condition," I tell him.

            "What is that," he asks.

"Do what I say," I say.

*CRASH* A loud noise comes from the distance.
