Arden~a Unicorn Quest fanfiction

Introduction

Most fanfiction books tend not to have a chapter where they introduce characters basic plot and world building etc, however those fandoms tend to be known enough that kind of stuff isn't necessarily. it's safe to assume 99.9% of my readers came for the cover and or the general premise sounded interesting enough, so I feel as though it's necessary for me to give readers a simple run down of things readers need to know about the Unicorn Quest. I realize as I write these words, that people are probably skip the this chapter due to length, if not just click right off it. (*sigh*, at least I tried). Anyway, if you're part of the 0.01% of those who's already read the series skip down to bottom so I can give you a short message :).

Basic world building

Magic system: magic is divided up by guilds, everyone in Arden is born with magic/born into a guild, and this magic allows them to manipulate a certain material. the guilds are as follows: Forager: a person who can manipulate metal,Gemmer: someone who can manipulate rocks,Spinner: someone who can manipulate cloth,Tiller: someone who can manipulate plants.

In addition to these four guilds, there are unicorns which are the most powerful beings in Arden, they are born from fallen stars, and wishes,are all white and are known to have the following abilities: heal,enhance all other Arden magic,open doors of all kinds, and appear to have some sort dream related abilities. Two rules you need to know about the series magic is: guilds can combine magic, this term is called jumbled magic. In order to do any super complex magic,(like for instance creating a door to another world) you magic from all four guilds, plus unicorn magic. their were also wraiths in the series they behave like normal wraiths, expect they can kill you by via touching you and giving you a disease callin wraith burn.

the Great Guild War: it was a war that took place in Arden before the main series started started over unicorns by the Queen of Arden: Estelle d'astora. the war ended with Arden's guilds becoming more separate and jumbled magic becoming illegal.

Characters

Clairina Elaina Martinson (aka Claire)
- Appearance: curly brown hair and gray eyes
- Age: 11 in the books
- guild: gemmer
- family: Sophia Martinson (older sister),Nadia/Diana Martinson (great aunt),unnamed mother and father.
- other important information: her sister often calls her by her first name,she's Arden royalty.

Sophia Andrea Martinson (aka Sophie)

- Appearance: she's mentioned as having long straight brown hair, typically kept in a high ponytail with a purple ribbon,pale skin,brown eyes,freckles. Throughout the books her appearance changes due to various events, these include: getting a pink star shaped scar just below her collar bone,a white streak in her hair,purple crescent moons framed around her eyes,silver rings around her Iris's,a pink circular scar in the middle of her forehead,and becoming more graceful.
-Age: 13 in the series
- guild and other known abilities: spinner,opening doors,transforming into a unicorn,sharing dreams with a unicorn.
- family: see Claire
- other important information: she's of Arden royalty,she was diagnosed with an unknown illness at age 10 and was believed to be cured from it when a unicorn saved her life, by allowing her to become a unicorn.

Sena Steele

- Appearance: straight red hair kept in a single pinned up braid,light skin.
- Age: around Sophie's age.
- guild: forager
- family: Nettle Green(foster brother),Francis Green(temporary guardian now deceased),Mathias Steele(father,deceased) Sylvia Steele(mother currently trapped).
- other important information:  her father was a tiller and her mother a forager,her parents were alchemists and were trying to bring back Arden's chimeras (which in this universe are made from a combination of tiller and forager magic), but one day when Sena was 8 she accidentally let out a chimera (the first moving chimera since they all went still), the authorities found, out executed her father,imprisoned her mother, and banished Sena from her own guild, where she was taken in by her father's old mentor Francis Green.

Nettle Green (aka Nett)

- Appearance: nut brown skin,green eyes,bushy black hair.
- Age: around Claire's age
- guild: tilller
- family: Francis Green(grandfather,deceased),Sena Steele(older foster sister),unnamed mom and dad(both deceased)
Other important information: Nett's parents died when he was young, due to wraith burn, his father was a tiller, his mother a native to the Sunrise Isles, which are the islands just off of Arden. His Marimo is a ball of moss that, when charged with enough sunlight can serve as a light source, and is also the only thing he that belonged to his mother.

Basic plot: without making this like 5 pages long, all you to know for right now is: after the characters Claire and Sophie's great aunt "died", them and their parents moved into it for the summer to clear it out, Sophie found a ladder with a chimney in it and climbed up it, after Sophie went missing Claire went up the ladder to find her,Claire finds out Arden's unicorns have gone extinct and have left wraiths in their place and that the guilds are separate and cannot use jumbled magic, Claire finds her sister, and two decide to stay in Arden to try and bring back the unicorns,major plot stuff happens, series ends with Sophie staying in Arden while Claire goes back to our world,parents end up not selling the house, and in fact use it as a weekend house.

Now anyone who needed to read through all this and is still interested in reading on, can skip this next part and go on to the first chapter, because if you don't, you're going to get very confused quite fast.

First off, hello to the one person who's also read the Unicorn Quest and has wished there was fanfiction of it. In order for you to not be quite so confused about the changes you'll find I've made to cannon, I'll list a few out of them out for you: firstly, if you read through the rest of this page you made notice that I put down that Sena's father was executed and her mother imprisoned, this is because I decided to make the series a bit more harsher, so Sena's father is dead, her mother still went and taught WovenRoot and wake and make chimeras, and still got imprisoned between worlds, and instead of the foursome's plan to save her working, it fails due to Sena missing something in the journals. Sophie doesn't get back with Thorn, but rather respects and acknowledges his actions. And Claire and lyric's friendship does get mended, but put on the backburner. I made a few more changes than just those three but they're not particularly plot relevant.
