The city streets were illuminated by the fluorescent, neon, lights beaming down onto the now drenched concrete. The previous downpour of rain made a dense fog settle, which in turn, made each breath feel forced. Not only was the darkness that escaped the light eerie, but it felt as though I would be swallowed whole. With that thought in mind I began to walk a little faster hoping that whatever monsters that lurked in the night could not capture me.

Now being a 22 year old woman I new no such monsters existed, but my imagination did not care for the facts, instead it enjoyed scaring me with it's conjured up shenanigans. I let out an uneasy laugh in an attempt to calm my nerves, but it only amplified my fears.

I was always afraid of the dark since I was a child and even though the city lights surrounded me I knew they only stretched so far.  Being homeless I felt as though I could never escape it.

I looked up from the curb to watch the cars slowly pass. Every so often I could hear the thud of a bass speaker vibrating from a passing vehicle and cat-calls directed towards any and every woman on the side walk. I shook my head while rolling my eyes. gross.

A mother with her sons hand in tow strolled behind me. before passing, he bent down and looked at me with giant brown eyes.

"Here you go miss" his mouth opened into a wide smile when I noticed his front tooth was missing. His small hand unraveled a single dollar bill and my heart ached seeing such kindness.

"Is this your tooth fairy money?" I asked barely able to contain the tears that threatened the corners of my eyes.

He gave a big nod before extending his hand farther towards me pushing the dollar closer and giving it a wiggle.

"I can't take this" I said nearly choking as I spoke. He could not be much older than six.

"please miss I inswist.."his lips formed into a sad frown and I couldn't handle his pout any longer. I reached forward and softly grabbed the dollar from his hand placing it to my heart.

"Thank you so much" I put forth a tearful smile and he looked up to his mother who nodded her head as if to say 'good job' before they continued down the street.

I glanced down at the bill once more before pushing it deeply into my pocket and stood up from my usual corner on Washington Blvd. making my way to the convenience store across the street.

Bodies grind against each other and the smell of sweat and lust emanated from everyone around me. the music pulsated every muscle in my being, but I didn't dance. Not when I'm searching for my next meal. I looked to my left to find a clearly intoxicated blonde female but I stopped when she threw her head back to swallow a pill. probably molly.

I hate drugged blood it tastes bitter and old. I quickly glanced around the room to find anyone that appeared to be sober.

None.

I always preferred a chase anyway.

Approaching the rear door I passed the bouncer who I knew as Richard. I was a regular at Club Sanguis seeing as I owned it.

I opened the heavy metal door as my senses overwhelmed me. My thirst for blood amplified by one-thousand and I felt my fangs shred through my gums. The longer I waited the more the burning in my mouth intensified. The pain only enraged the beast within me and I hissed in an attempt to control the uncontrollable. My vision sharpened and I zeroed in on a brunette walking across the street.
