Murmurs.... that's all I hear. It's annoying. It isn't real. More murmurs gather.... it's louder...
It isn't real! Shut up! Go away! It's fake!
The thunder growled and ripped through the clouds... it was down pouring, and the townspeople were huddled in the streets, awaiting the nonexistent 'monster' they all claim to see so much.
They don't understand... no one does anymore. They're only voices in the distance. But so absurdly annoying!
I stood from the couch and walked out of the living room, and out into the pouring rain.... that's where I saw something I wish I never saw.

*  *  *

"Shh...." I was curled in my low bed, my knees hugged close to my chest as I waited patiently for the storm to pass. My back lightly pressed against the wall behind me, I rocked unsteadily to calm myself. It helped little. "The wind will carry their sounds..." I sighed, and the next blow of thunder rolled over us loudly with a small drag at the end. So much for the sound being carried...
It was the first storm we had in weeks...
The stories can't be true.. I thought to myself, nothing to worry about... I was nearly content when a deafening scream filled the air. I jumped, and nearly kicked off of my bed.
Running, to the door, I was shrugging my coat on, where it used to lay on the coat hanger. I opened the door and had to squint to see past the rain. My hand flew up instinctively to try to shield my eyes further.

There, a girl on her knees, begging at the darkness. Her very black hair fell beside her face as the rain soaked it further. She wore a pair of gray shorts and an over-sized white shirt that was getting it's back soaked.
Was she crying? I could hear faint whining from her direction, and the rest of the townspeople where pushed back toward my house-- away from the girl.
Barefoot, I ran out of my door frame and toward the supposedly crying female. I knelt down and gently set both of my hands upon her shoulders, trying to help her up. She tried shrugging away, but I insisted on pulling her to her feet anyways. She was only about 16.
I could hear her faintly whining 'no, no, no' over and over again. What had happened?
"Ma'am, we need to get you inside..." I had to raise my voice slightly so she could hear me over the rain. She simply shook her head, still chanting 'no'. "Ma'am, please... Let's get inside, you're soaking wet." I looked back at the rest of the townspeople, there faces covered with horrified expressions.

Thunder rolled again, it was quieter but the storm was just in it's beginning.
I pulled the little girl to her feet, and guided her back to the rest of the townspeople. "Get her inside, and please try to calm her down so I can talk to her. I'll be in in just a minute." I commanded another woman who took her carefully in her arms.
This woman's hair was soaked in it's loose bun, it looked nearly black. Her eyes were a careful green, and reassuring. She was thin with slim arms, but she had a slight build to her body. Her shirt was form fitting and a dark blue, not professional but not anything that would be comfortable on a normal day, and simple blue jeans.
"Yes, Sir." The woman said just before turning to escort the poor girl inside. I gave the townspeople a simple nod, and they slowly departed into their homes. Only a couple of people remained, staring wide eyed past me, behind me...
They eventually, unwillingly, turned to walk to their homes as well.

I sighed, and turned around to face the direction in which the girl had been kneeling toward. I squinted and tried peering through the harsh rain. I moved slightly closer as I could have sworn I made something out in the darkness.
Lightning struck just for a second, maybe less, then it wen't dark.
Something was definitely there. I mostly saw two circles high in the air. I was about 5'7". The eyes looked about 6'8" in the distance.
I froze with shock as I imagined those circles as it's eyes.
The next flash of light flashed, but... it wasn't there. I searched frantically for it, and yet, I never sought to see it again.

Not. Real. I thought, over and over again. It couldn't be. Just going crazy. That's the only logical explanation.

      I hope.

I allowed myself to walk back to the waiting girl whom I had spotted in the street. I hope she's fine, I thought as I made my way into the warm home. I stood there for a minute, letting most of the rain drip from my clothes and hair onto the widened welcome mat.

The same woman that took the crying girl from me now greeted me from the living room she stood in. I gave her a small smile, despite everything happening and continued my way around her to check up on the girl.
She was curled over, rocking back and forth on the small couch she had in the small room. I stepped around her stretched feet and simply knelt beside her again, trying to look into her eyes, head bent.
"Ma'am...?" I asked in a soft voice. "..hey, it's ok. You're safe, listen." I tried soothing her, but her face looked as if she merely didn't hear me speak. I looked up at the waiting woman in the entrance. "What's your name, miss?" I asked in a slightly louder voice, but I was still polite.
The woman searched my face for a minute, then quietly spoke, "Alena."
I smiled politely. "It's very nice to meet you, Alena." She smiled back, but then quickly looked away and to the side. I brought my attention back to the traumatized girl.
"Hey.." I tried again. This time, she looked up only unwillingly. Her eyes were wide and... well, she saw something. "Don't be afraid. You can trust me." I continued. She shook her head, at least the chanting had stopped.
I reached my hand up to touch her back. "What happened...?" I asked, curious but also knowing as I was sure she was crazy as well.

Alena quietly cleared her throat, and casually in a small movement, motioned me to follow her. I did so, my hand falling from the girls back as I stepped over her feet again to follow Alena into the kitchen. We wen't through the entrance of the living room and took a hard left to meet a slightly bigger room as meant to be the kitchen area.
She turned around after meeting the counter. She took a deep breath, looking down. I stared at her in confusion, but stayed patient as I waited for her to begin.
With another deep sigh, which dragged on a few seconds, she finally looked up to meet my painfully curious gaze.
"I've been here for... what seems like a long time, but the truth is it's only been a few months." She looked off to the side, like she was ashamed. "We were all gathered there out in the street for a very good reason. It's-" She cut off, biting her lip, considering.
"What? You can tell me." I assured her. She waved her hand as if that's not what she meant, then she looked up at me seriously. "Then what?" I asked, totally absentminded.
"Her mother," She began unwillingly, quieting to a near whisper.
