it was late at night, as I sat there on my bed, staring out the window that was covered with translucent white drapes, a wistful look on my face and a nostalgic feeling bubbling in my veins.
the moon just looked so... beautiful today. it was enticing, making me curious and curiouser as I couldn't look away, as if it was luring me in. I couldn't resist any longer, the temptation too strong to ignore. sure, it was almost midnight, but at the moment none of that seemed to matter. I lost record of the time, not focusing on anything else.
I gingerly removed my blanket and left my house, walking, then slowly gaining more and more speed till I started running, as if something would slip from my hands, and if I reached there a minute later, I would miss something, it falling out of my grasp forever.
I ran and I ran, no regard for the fact that I was in my nightgown, not wearing any shoes. I ran through the forest as if my life depended on it, ignoring all the blisters and cuts I was receiving, not even realising the pain I was going through. I could see it; an open clearing in the forest where there rested a cliff opening out into the ocean, the moon glistening against the raging waters.
suddenly, while I was running, someone bumped into me.
"what the fu-"
"oh my goodness, I'm so sorry! I didn't even see you there."
I quickly checked the time on my watch, 12:01am. dammit.
I looked up and saw a young man looking at me with a sheepish expression. in that small fraction of a second, I noticed more than you'd think. his face shape was in the form of a heart, widening at his puffy cheeks which showcased two adorable dimples that made my own heart melt. next, I noticed his eyes. he had beautiful almond shaped mono-lid eyes that were filled with curiosity and adventure. however, because of the darkness, it took me too long to notice that he had blue eyes, and purple hair.
we both suddenly spoke unanimously, "woah! I've never seen someone with purple eyes!"
"woah! I've never seen someone with purple hair!" and we both burst out laughing. as we finally calmed down, he said, "I'm so sorry, you looked like you were in a rush..."
"oh no it's okay now, I was the one who bumped into you anyway. would you like to come with me to the cliff right there? or no wait... you seemed to be in a rush too earlier."
"uhm it's no problem anymore haha, I can come with you if it's no trouble." and then he looked away, but I could've sworn I saw a light red tint making its way onto his face.
as we started walking towards the clearing, I started to make some small talk, "so what's your name? I'm y/n."
"ah, you have a pretty name. I'm namjoon. also sorry to go off topic but I've been wondering for a while now, are your eyes actually purple or are they contacts?"
"nope, they're one hundred percent natural."
"woah that's so cool then!"
"thank you," I said awkwardly, unsure regarding how to accept a compliment.
"what about your hair? have you dyed it?" I asked.
"no, actually, I was born with purple hair," he replied. while did this surprise me, I simply stared at his beautiful purple locks in admiration.
by the time we finished talking, we'd already reached the cliff, but as I continued walking towards the edge of it, when I turned around I saw that namjoon wasn't following. he seemed a bit hesitant, in fact.
"namjoon!" I called out, shaking my head as I figured out what was wrong, "don't be scared, live a little!"
and I guess that convinced him, because afterwards he slowly made his way over to where I was standing. as he did that, I saw as his expression changed from skepticism to awe, his mouth falling open from the sight in front of him.
"wow," he spoke with all the amazement you could ever hear in someone's voice, "look at the moon. doesn't it make you feel some type of way?"
"what type of way, exactly?" I questioned, a bit confused.
"I don't know... as if— as if you don't belong here. as if you belong up there, with the stars and the moon, as if they're calling out to you. a strange longing to be able to touch every crater in the moon and feel the footprints left by all the different astronauts. I want to be one of those people, if only I could touch the moon."
"yeah, I feel the same way. I love being in the dark, it's so calming."
"a creature of the night. a moonchild."
"...yeah, exactly that," I responded, a bit taken aback at how he managed to find the perfect word for something I hadn't been able to put a label to in years.
as we sat there on the edge of the cliff, staring at the bright full moon, a couple of thoughts crossed through my head. strangely, I didn't feel like I had missed something, lost something. nothing in my heart felt empty as if it were void of anything that I was searching for earlier. truth be told... it felt like I had found that something— I didn't know what it could've possibly even been, though.
"it feels so serene, I want to simply stay here forever."
"I wish we could, really," I spoke with complete honesty, because I truly felt the same way.
as we stared at each other more and more... the pull I felt towards him was, irresistible. we shifted closer to each other, till our legs touched and I could feel the rushed pattern of his breathing against my cheek, until he cupped my face with his thumb and brought his lips closer to mine.
the kiss was like a relief, a warm touch in the coldness of the night. it felt like the moon was connecting us, making us feel drawn to each other through its grey array of patterns. It felt like a kiss mixed with destiny, the silver exterior of the moon melting into our veins, merging with our blood, turning it silver.
the shimmering of the water beneath us added to the sound of my heartbeat against his, with the waves crashing against the shore with the intensity of a tsunami, or for lack of better words, my rapidly beating heart.
it felt like tasting a vast collection of the finest silverware there was, a touch of expensive on my tongue but also the groundbreaking shimmer of a silver cloud, soft as cloud nine.
I didn't know what made me want to come here, what I was meant to find, however under all that sliver of hope, I felt like everything was fated, and all that we needed was a little nudge.
as we kissed on the edge of the cliff, the passion mixed with the exact craziness and adventure of jumping off the cliff at any moment, that was when I realised, me and him met under the moon for a reason; connected by our purple hair and eyes, as the moon gave us a light forehead peck.
we kissed forever and ever, a newfound love blossoming in each of our growingly imperfect flowering hearts, the moonlight in the background as if giving us hints, telling us what we are and what we were meant to be, with a sly smile on its face, looking down at us with blessings and in admiration. that's when it dawned upon me, an unforgettable sensation, travelling like pixie dust from head to toe of my skin.
forever destined to be moonchildren
