“And this isn’t. Man I just wanna get rid of this kid, and get the money,” Josh complained.
“Did you bring the beer Shelby?” Bill asked.
“I don’t want you getting drunk tonight Bill. You’re going take the first watch for the little brat.”
“Awww come on Matt. What if I promised to call you boss?”
“I’ve known you for 12 years Bill. I wouldn’t have you call me boss if you really wanted to. I’m done with you people. You all know where you’re sleeping. Shelby clean up and give the kid some leftovers and water. Bill your shift starts at 11. If I find so much as a bruise on her in the morning I’ll wring your neck.” Alicia heard the scraping of stairs and the clink of plates.
A few seconds later Shelby opens the door to the staircase and comes thundering down. She’s rather skinny, but really pretty. In extremely short jean shorts and a cut flannel shirt she didn’t look in the league of Matt, who was hairy, muscular, and like 5’2. His muddy brown eyes weren’t really what you’d call attractive.
“Alright,” Shelby said coming closer to her. If you scream I won’t hesitate to let Matt come down here and whop your butt.”
She ripped off my duct tape. Alicia wasn’t going to scream. Who would hear her? They were in the middle of nowhere. She would have to bide her time and wait for the moment of escape. Who was she kidding? I can’t drive out of here, or fight off Matt, Josh, Shelby, and Bill. I am doomed. She thought.
Shelby fed her bits of pizza and sips of water. She kept mumbling things Alicia couldn’t make out. One thing she did decipher was
“Poor girl, Ben’s gonna rub her raw.” I was scared. Shelby left and all I could hear was the T.V. upstairs. All she could do was dangle till 11. Eventually she hears a chorus of good nights from upstairs, and Bill and Matt come down the stairs. Matt looks all business, but Bill looked disappointed. Matt walked straight up to me and looked her in the eye. Alicia looked down at the ground.
“So are you going to be good tonight honey. LOOK ME IN THE EYE WHEN I AM TALKING TO YOU!!!!” he bellowed showering me in spit. When Alicia didn’t look up he smacked her. Alicia fought tears. They would not see her cry! Yet she didn’t want to be hit again so she looked in Matt’s cold eyes. “That’s better, now I hope for your sake you’re a good little girl tonight. I am giving Bill permission to hit, punch, or kick you into submission. If you have been bad tonight in the morning I’ll beat you myself. Good night honey,” he walked upstairs leaving Alicia alone with Bill. He had an evil grin on his face. It will be a long night.
At first Bill just looked at Alicia hanging there. She still had no gag on, so Bill started asking questions, probably to see if she would lie or refuse to answer.
“Why are you wanted by Mr. Ritch?” He asked lighting a cigarette.
“Who?” Alicia asked confused. Who was Mr. Ritch? The name sounded kind of familiar. Maybe she had heard it on T.V. Bill laughed wheezly.
“You don’t know why you’re here in this cellar with us? This is precious! Of course I’m not going to tell you, why? The less you know the easier this is going to be.”
Alicia gave him a glare and resolved to staying silent the rest of the night.
“So sweetie, what’s your name?” Alicia looked at the ground. “I asked you a question!” Bill got up and walked over, a gleam in his eye. Alicia realized too late this was what he wanted, an excuse to hit her. What a sick, sick man!
Bill walked over with a knife in his hand. Alicia prepared for the worst, but he just cut her down from the ceiling. She fell, all the air rushing out of her lungs. While she was struggling to get up Bill kicked her in the side. She fell over and clutched her side. All her air left her again, another blow came, then another, then another. Alicia didn’t scream, but she whimpered, and this only made Bill hit her harder.
After several minutes of continual kicking Bill finally stopped. He chuckled seeing her so helpless and wounded on the ground. He went into the next room and after a few minutes heavy breathing wafted out of the room. Then Alicia saw her chance.
Bill had left the knife on the floor. She scooted forward and grabbed the knife and started sawing. In a few minutes her hands were free. She quickly cut her legs free. Alicia didn’t have much of a plan. Maybe she’d run to the woods. Not the most smart and well thought through plan, but Alicia was too excited to realize the gaping hole in her plan.
Alicia snuck up the stairs, and through the kitchen. She peeked into the living room. Matt was asleep on the couch. She tiptoed to the door, and opened it. Creak! The door squeaked.
Alicia didn’t look back she just ran towards the woods. She wasn’t even halfway there before rough hands grabbed her. After kicking, biting, and scratching for a whole minute. Matt grabbed her arms, pinning them to her side. Alicia was dragged back inside to the living room.
Matt through her on the couch, Bill walked in and Matt spit every foul word he knew at him. Alicia cowered on the couch.
“SHE ALMOST ESCAPED YOU IDIOT! WHAT IF SHE HAD? HOW DID YOU LET A LITTLE GIRL ESCAPE!” Matt went on yelling for 10 minutes. Shelby and Josh tried calming him down, but it was useless. Still screaming himself hoarse Matt dragged Alicia by the hair downstairs and through her down on the ground. When Matt found the knife on the ground he went berserk. Finally he turned to Alicia and yelled
“WHAT HAPPENED GIRL!” Alicia whimpered under the weight of his red face.
“Hee…left..the knife...on the ggroundd... and I ccutt… my wrist free..,” Alicia swore the vein on his neck was going to burst.
“YOU LEFT THE KNIFE ON THE GROUND????!!! WERE YOU DRUNK????!!!! YOU IDIOT, YOU ALMOST CAUSED US TO LOSE 200 GRAND!!!!!!” Matt was so ticked. He loomed over Bill’s cowering form.
“Look I’m sorry Matt. It was a stupid mistake I know! Just don’t hurt me!” he whimpered. He sounded as scared as Alicia felt.
“Just don’t .. do.. anything.. like .. that again..” he calmed down enough to speak normally, but his voice was still shaking from rage. “Shelby!” he snapped. “You watch the kid the rest of the night, rest of you, back to bed!” Shelby didn’t even look hurt at his tone. She just hurried over to Alicia. Everyone else climbed the stairs.
Shelby just tied Alicia to the ceiling again, ouch. Then she just sat in the corner and had a very intent conversation via text. Her brow furrowed in either anger or frustration as she read the texts and replied. Alicia wondered who she was texting and why.
After around an hour of hanging there Alicia’s arms felt like they were about to disconnect from her shoulders, and finally Shelby put down her cell phone and curled up in a sleeping bag Matt had brought down for her. Alicia knew she’d never fall asleep in this much discomfort, but it was worth a try. She closed her eyes and tried to relax, but her brain was still whirling from the events of the day.
So many questions! Who were these people? Who was Mr. Ritch? Why was she worth so much money? Who was Shelby texting? Alicia didn’t know why this question bothered her so much. Who cares who she was texting! It was probably a regular everyday problem, but still. Unease swept through Alicia.
