There has always been that draw to Jem for whatever reason, Rhiannon didn't know. After Will left her standing near the top of the stairs she almost threw herself down the steps as fast as she could and next thing she knew she found herself in front of Jem's door. She stood there for what seemed like an hour before she finally had the courage to knock on the door.
"What's wrong, is it Tessa? Will?" he questioned, as Rhiannon noted the paler then normal skin tone and the tasseled hair. But that was not what made her words hitch in her throat.
"Tessa is fine." Rhiannon whispered, "And Will is fine also."
"Rhi I'm-" he started, examining her features. But she cut him off by putting up a hand and a soft smile coming to her face, but not reaching her eyes.
"I, uh, I am sorry to bother you." and with that she turned around and practically ran down the hallway in the opposite direction she had came from. Why she had even ended up at Jem's door, she wasn't sure. Could she have been so stupid as to think he would not ask about Tessa? Her own sister. Was Will only trying to be nice when he kissed her on the cheek when she thought he was going to kiss her on the lips? Was it some kind of sick joke? She knew she was not as beautiful as Tessa. She could never be Tessa.
"Rhiannon, what is it?" Rhiannon stopped cold in her tracks as she found herself in the lower levels of the Institute. Henry stared at her as if she was an alien he wanted to dissect. Rhiannon looked around the laboratory that Henry had made for himself and for the first time since arriving here, she was impressed with Henry. He may be a quack most of the time but he truly was brilliant and you could tell he loved Charlotte. Whether she realized it or not.
"Sorry, Henry to burst in here like this. I wasn't paying attention to where I was going and ended up here." Rhiannon explained a small smile coming to her face. "I think this is the first time I have been down here, and this place is rather amazing Henry. You don't get enough credit."
"You know I think that is the first flattering thing I have ever heard you say." Henry teased, but a smile coming to his face nonetheless. "But tell me what is going on."
Rhiannon watched him as he set the instruments down on the table and motioned for her to sit on the stool that was beside him.
"I just, I am just tired of being second best to Tessa." Rhiannon explained, with a sigh. "With Will and Jem I mean."
"Ah yes," Henry nodded his head the smile still plastered on his face. "I have noticed the way you are with both of them. The secret glances to Jem when you think he is not looking and the way you tease Will."
"God!" Rhiannon muttered, putting a hand over her mouth.
"Only if you watch closely, which most people around here do not do, is it noticeable. " Henry muttered,
Rhiannon slouched and put her elbows on the table. Her hands went down her face as she let out a sigh. "I have feelings for them both as you so might have guessed. Am I a bad person for wanting them both? For hurting when I watch both of them with my sister?"
Henry turned to fully face her, taking her hands in his. "You are not a bad person for feeling what you feel. They are both dunderheads if they do not see your worth, and they are blind if they can not see what is right in front of them. You are a beautiful girl who though sometimes has an attitude that makes you wish you ran away and hid."
Rhiannon laughed at that as she wiped away a lone tear that had escaped her eyes. "Henry, who would have thought you would be the one to comfort me."
"I'm surprisingly good at it, ain't I?" Henry laughed, as he let go of her hands and stood from his stool. "I think you should get to bed it is getting late."
Rhiannon stood from the stool she occupied and thanked him again and left the room quickly. Finding her way back up the stairs and into her room quietly hoping no one would have missed her, though she figures not.
Jem's POV:
I stood with my door still open and my hand still attached to the door. I could feel what little color I have drain from my face and body. How could I have been so stupid to ask about Tessa, when Rhiannon was standing there looking about ready to throw up or worse? She still wore what looked to be Will's jacket and nothing else. Though it was big on her so it made it look like a jacket dress or something. What had happened to the clothes she was wearing I was not entirely sure.
"Jem?" I shook my head and noticed Rhiannon standing in front of me, my stomach doing flapjacks. "Are you okay? Do I need to get Will?"
"No, I'm okay." I stated shaking my head. "Would you like to come in?"
Rhiannon nodded her head as I let her come into my room shutting the door behind her. "I am sorry about earlier."
"You don't have to apologize." I muttered, sitting on the chest at the foot of my bed. "Can I ask what happened to your clothes and why you are wearing Will's jacket?"
Rhiannon looked down at what she was wearing and what little color she had on her face drained away and a small nervous laugh escaped her lips, "Well I always knew how to make a statement. Members of the enclave was here. And they wanted to know exactly what Tessa and I were. So I changed for them."
"What do you mean you changed? Are you like Tessa that you can change into another person?" I questioned.
"In a way I kind of am like Tessa though I do not need to have something to help me change into something for the first time. However I am not like her in the way that she can change into another person. I change into animals. Every bone in my body breaks and fur takes over my skin." she explained. "I would show you but I don't really feel like changing into a flee infested animal."
I let out a small laugh, "I should hope not, I don't want flees in here."
"You sure? You let Will in here all the time." she smiled.
"I resent that!" a voice sounded making both of us jump. Will had silently came into my room standing in his usual spot near the fireplace. "How come you are in here still dressed in my jacket?"
"William." I muttered, giving him a small knowing look. Trying to tell him not to be rude without actually saying it.
"I um, I am just going to go. Good night Jem." Rhiannon muttered and left without waiting for a reply.
"So exactly why was she here?" Will questioned once the door was closed, almost sounding jealous.
"Are you jealous, Will?" I smiled, "And frankly I don't know she came here earlier and I thought something might have been wrong with you or Tessa. She looked so hurt by it. And then she came back here only moments ago and she never got around to saying what she came here for because you came in."
"I am not jealous." Will stated, looking into the fire.
"Only a jealous person would say that." I urged. "Is something wrong?"
Will turned his head towards me, but didn't actually look at me. "I might have almost kissed her tonight. I wanted to kiss her."
"Who? Rhiannon? Or Tessa?" I questioned, knowing that he wasnt talking about Jessamine.
"Rhiannon." was all he said, and it was enough for my stomach drop further than it had earlier.
"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked.
"What are we two girls now?" Will silently whispered, making me laugh.
"No but it doesn't hurt to talk things through or about things." I added.
