"Amelia, come here." I heard my mom call from the bathroom. I knew what was about to happen, the thing I most dreaded for the past six years of my life. I walked slowly into the bathroom, dreading what my mom was holding. The green eye contacts.
"Do u have to wear them, mommy?" I complained, sitting sulkily on the toilet seat and she pulled the contacts out of the cupboard.
"Yes." My mom said sternly, and I knew there was no convincing her otherwise.
I hated wearing the contacts. The contacts didn't bother me much, they sure were annoying at times. But really I just wanted to show the world my true eye colour. My eyes were a vivid violet colour, one I'd never seen on anyone else. They were so pretty, and must've had some super powers with them and I was definitely going to be rich as I grew up. I always asked my parents what my eye colour meant for my future, but they would just smile and quickly change the subject. I wondered why they did this, but maybe they were saving it as a surprise as I got older.
"Okay Amelia, open your eyes up." My mom told me as she brought the contacts closer to my eyes and put them in place. I looked into the mirror and just like every morning, my beautiful violet eyes were turned green.
"Now, when you get to school, what do you say when they talk about you're eye colour?" My mousey asked me, waiting for a response.
"That I have green eyes." I sighed sadly, looking to the ground. "But my eyes are violet!" I snapped at my mom.
My mother glared at me. "They are green for your own safety." She said in a menacing tone through gritted teeth. She then swiftly left the room, leaving me in the bathroom to stare in the mirror.
Why couldn't I just tell the world I had violet eyes? Wouldn't it be cool and interesting? I sighed deeply as I walked out of the bathroom to grab my school bag, as it was time for my mom to drive me to school.
"Amelia, honey." My called from the kitchen, I walked in and she handed me my lunch bag. "Lets go to the car now."
My mother lead me out into the driveway and into the back of our old tiny car. I enjoyed watching the other kids outside playing with their friends, my mother had forbid me to play with the other kids outside school. She said I was for my safety. I scoffed, what would I even need to be kept safe from?
We soon arrived at the front of the school, and I had hopped out of the car and waved goodbye to my mom as I walked over to my classroom.
There in the front of the class was Jinny Parkson. She was beloved by all the other girls in the class for her spectacular golden brown eyes. They sure were gorgeous, glittering golden in the sunlight. Ms. Tarra had told us that Golden brown was the rarest colour of all the eyes colours, and meant that the person who had them would be extremely successful in the future. After Ms. Tarra has told the class this information, Jinny had suddenly became queen bee and very cocky.
I walked past them and over to my friends, Clara Anderson and Hazel Lock. They had been my best friends since the beginning of the school, and the only two girls who didn't obsess over Jinny.
"Hi, Amelia!" Clara called, a big smile across her face. Hazel waved cheerfully as I approached them.
Clara was a kind and happy girl, she always cheered up every room she entered. She had dark skin and curly jet black hair, she had chocolate brown eyes, which I thought were very pretty, but got no attention from the other students.
Hazel on the other hand was a shy girl, she didn't talk much in class and chose to only talk to Clara And I. Hazel had pale skin and wavy light brown hair, her eyes were a gorgeous colour of Hazel, like her name. She had gained popularity for her eye colour, because it had been in the top five rarest eye colours. Even with popularity, Hazel had never strayed from Clara and I.
Green eyes of course were up there, but I was sure they were not as rare as my violet eyes.
I chatted to my friends out front the class about my new toys I had gotten and all the cool things happening in our lives, when the bell rang and we were lead into class by Ms. Tarra.
I sat down at a table with Clara, Hazel and two boys, Damon Trez and Layton Hart. They were best friends, and didn't seem to really talk to anyone else, but they had immense popularity. Damon had amber eyes, the second rarest eye colour, but this colour decided his fate to be a top list celebrity. He had messy dark brown and tan skin. He was quite a quiet boy, but he was all the same nice to me whenever we talked.
Layton on the other hand was popular for his cattiness, he was destined to be popular. He was the class clown and I even couldn't laughing at his jokes. Layton had big blue eyes, which he was destined to have a career talking a lot. He had bright blonde hair that shone in the light and fair skin, his face littered with freckles.
"Today, we will be discussing the wealth that each eye colour will have!" Ms. Tarra announced to the class, and they broke out in chatter.
"Wealth? What is that?" Clara had asked me and Hazel, but we had no clue.
"It means how much money you will have when your older." Damon had said to us plainly, not looking at us but focusing on the book he was reading.
"Thanks." Clara said to Damon before breaking out into chatter with Hazel and I about it. Of course I'd learn about what green eyes would make, but that wasn't my actual eye colour. Ms. Tarra has never once mentioned violet eyes to the class. Maybe because there were no kids with violet eyes in this class, I told myself.
While ms. Tarra was talking about how Blue eyes would make thousands of dollars per month, I decided to raise my hand and ask the question that was burning inside my head.
"Yes, Amelia?" She said, all her attention and the classes on me.
"What about violet eyes?" I asked her curiously, but she gave me a confused look.
"What do you mean violet eyes, Amelia?" She said, laughing slightly. "There's no such thing as violet eyes."
"Uh, what?" I asked her, I was confused and had so many questions. Violet eyes were not a thing? But they were, because I had them. A million questions burned in my mind, it had felt like a bomb had been dropped on me.
"Anything else, Amelia?"she asked me kindly.
"No." I said, even though I wanted to ask her a million questions, it just felt like something to ask my mom.
I went through the whole day of school thinking about violet eyes, questions flying through my mind. When I got into the car I couldn't help but hold back the questions
"Mommy, how come Ms. Tarra said violet eyes aren't real?" I asked her impatiently, desperate for her to say that ms. Tarra was just wrong and they were a rare eye colour. But my mother stayed silent for a minute.
"Mommy?" I said again, wanting her to answer me immediately.
"We'll talk about this with your dad." My mom said, it sounded like her voice was tied down, like she couldn't speak properly.
It felt like the longest car ride home, but eventually we were in the driveway to my tiny house.
We walked into the house in silence, it felt as though the air around us was thick.
My dad was sitting in his usual chair, he looked up from his newspaper and smiled, but it faded when he noticed my mother was upset.
"What's the matter, Mel?" My dad asked her quietly, putting his newspaper aside.
"She knows about the violet eyes, Brad." My mom said, her voice sounding more broken now.
I saw my fathers eyes fall into me, they looked deeply sad. "This early, I didn't think she'd be this smart or curious about them." My father said quietly.
"Well, she's figured out." My mother said, she then turned to me. "Have a Seay, Amy, this is going to be tough."
