Scarlett Downy pulled the butter covered popcorn out of the microwave squealing. It was Friday night and Scarlett's best friends were coming over for one of there Friday night hang outs. Since her mother never let them hang out at her place this was the first time Scarlett was hosting it and she wanted everything to be perfect. The only reason she was having it was because her mother was out of town.
The doorbell rang and Scarlett answered it in her black spandex short and sliver dance tank top. Her usual attire.
"Hey Callie." She hugged her red-headed friend and invited her in.
"Wow Scar, your house is amazing from the outside and even better in the inside." Scarlett laughed as her friend ran down the hall towards to kitchen. Scarlett took one last look outside before following her friend.
Scarlett walked In to find her friend checking out every door. She came to one and stopped. "Scar, what's down here?" Callie had found the basement, Scarlett's mom doesn't even let her down there.
"I'm not sure. I've never been in the basement."
"Well then let's go!"
"Wait." Scarlett pulled her friend back.
"Aren't you interested in what's down there?"
"Yeah but-"
"No buts let's go." Callie went down and after a moment Scarlett followed.
It was strangely clean for a place that's never used and it was basically empty except for a book self.
Callie grabbed a book and showed it to Scarlett. "'Spells & More.' Weird huh? We have to try some of them out."
"Callie." Scarlett whined.
"Oh, stop being a party pooper." The doorbell rang. "Whit's here!"
Scarlett sighed and lead her friend up to the door. She looked it with a big smile. "Whitney!" The new friends hugged like they hadn't seen each other in weeks, but it had only been a few hours. Whitney had similar looks to Scarlett minus the fact that Whitney was much shorter and had dark eyes and darker hair.
"Whit! Your never going to guess what we found!"
"Callie." Scarlett whined.
"Hush!" Callie turned to Whitney. "It's a spell book!"
"No way!" Whitney didn't like the idea anymore than Scarlett, be she always pretended to like Callie's ideas.
"Where's the living room Scarlett?" Scarlett paused before leading her friends to her living room.
They gathered around the coffee table while Callie flipped through the book.
"Oh em gee! Look at this spell. It's for what you desire most."
"What goes that mean?" Scarlett really wanted to get this over with.
"It says you do the spell and the devil comes to you and grant you what you desire most."
"The devil?" Whitney was biting her nails.
"That's enough Callie, put the book away."
"No! Can we please just try it? I mean magic isn't real, so what could the harm be?"
Scarlett sighed.
Whitney sat up straight. "She's right, we should try it. What to we need?"
"It says just a candle. We need to light it."
Scarlett's two best friends looked at her. She gave in and got the candle and lit it. "What now?"
"We repeat the chant until the candle goes out." Callie put the book out so everyone could see it.
They started the chant and repeated the chant eight times before Whitney spoke up.
"I don't think it's working."
"Once more." Scarlett wondered who said that only to realize it was herself.
They repeated it once more and sure enough the candle went out as did the lights.
Whitney screamed. "What the hell just happened?"
Scarlett stood up trying not to fall over. "It's probably just the storm." As if on cue the lights came back on.
The three friends stayed there in silence for five minutes staring at the blown out candle.
"I don't think it worked." Whitney said.
"I knew it was rubbish." Callie closed the book.
They put the book back and watched movies for the rest of the night, unable to get ride of the strange feeling they had.
