It's the year 4421 and everything is steampowered.
It all started in 3371. A series of supervolcano eruptions caused there to be so much ash in the air that all sunlight got blocked out. This caused the earth to get almost completely covered in ice. There was just enough habitable land left for quite some species to survive. Among them homo sapiens, better known as humans.
The freezing proces couldn't be completed due to the high amounts of CO2 which created a greenhouse effect strong enough for the earth to slowly make it's recovery. With the warmer climate, plants started to flourish and soon we entered a world like in the carboon era (though this time there were mammals too, and not just gigantic insects). Most of the carbon dioxide got used by plants to grow, leaving us with an atmosphere simular to the one we had before this all happened. Humans somehow got back to their feet and became the dominant species -again. They live in big cities with huge walls to protect them from the huge insects like dragonflies with a wingspan of a hundred centimeters.
Mankind had to start over and they did pretty much the same thing again: huge cities, grosly overpopulated, nobles got all power and everything is powered by steamengines. Rich people wear impractical clothes to show off their wealth and status while poor people almost starve to death. If you don't want to live in the cities, you turn "rogue". That doesn't mean you are a bad person, it only means you want to think for yourself and live free, making you a danger for the delicate balance of society. You get pushed out by the nobles. You can live free, exactly what you wanted. The only thing less fortunate about this must be the fact that outside the protective city, there is no electricity, you can't work to earn money, you can't buy groceries. You are forced to live like a hunter/gatherer or build a farm which will be quite difficult if you are constantly threatened by the army from the city.
Ofcourse every now and then the rogues will go into a city to get stuff they either need or just want, or to look for a partner but they can never stay for too long. The nobles will get uncomfortable and send the army to find you and kill you.
So life isn't really perfect on either side, but both side are doing pretty well. We will see people from both sides and watch what happens when a girl isn't afraid to change things up and when a boys love for that girl is strong enough to make him do stupid things.
/* I can tell you now that this will not be like every other lovestory, I personally don't like the same falling in love process like you read in most of the other storys where you can tell as soon as the characters are introduced how they will fall in love and you pretty much know everything that will happen in the book from the first chapter.... As you might tell from my English, it's not my native tongue. Feel free to correct errors, it will only help me. Hopefully someone will enjoy this story. */
