"Well I know I'm not the kid you thought you knew back in high school.
Never going, only showing up when we had to.
Attention that we crave, don't tell us to behave,
I'm sick of always hearing act your age."
-Fat Lip, Sum 41

"Kyokaaaaaaa!" A pink skinned/haired girl called out in a sing-song voice, as the raven-haired girl was walking home from school. Kyoka Jiro sighed, before turning to face her pink classmate.

"What?" Kyoka asked with a slightly annoyed expression, readjusting her backpack. It was a sunny, warm day, as the school day had just ended, and Kyoka had just exited the school campus.

"So you know how you said you wanted a boyfriend~?" Mina Ashido teased after catching up with her.

"No...?" Kyoka replied, before Mina laughed, putting an arm around her shoulder.

"You didn't say that when we pulled an all nighter~." Mina told her, before Kyoka rolled her eyes.

"I only said that because everyone else did. And either way, I was tired, so there's no way in hell I would say that in any other circumstances."  Kyoka told her friend pessimistically.

"Well either way, he's sitting at our lunch table tomorrow." Mina told her with a shrug. "Ako is on vacation so we have a free spot open at our lunch table." Ako was someone who sat at Kyoka and Mina's table at lunch. Their table could be considered the "popular girls" table, seating 8. Kyoka would never sit their, both because she wasn't exactly popular and didn't really get along incredibly well with the other girls there.

However, Mina had been Kyoka's best friend since they were kindergarteners, so Mina arranged so Kyoka could sit there. Mina enjoyed the table because all the girls there were extroverted popular girls, like her, while Kyoka liked the table because it was super close to her locker, and because Mina was there. Kyoka and the other girls didn't hate eachother, its just that Kyoka thought they were fake and materialistic.

"According to Miyumi, the new boy is cuuuute~." Mina told Kyoka in a sing-song voice.  Miyumi was one of the girls at their lunch table. This went back to Kyoka's distaste for the girls at her table. Fuck all with his personality or interests, he's conventionally attractive so they're interested in him. Mina was also like this, however, Kyoka liked Mina a lot more since Mina was more tolerable about boys.  Kyoka was so incredibly bored by their table's discussions about boys since she didn't like anyone that way, and while she could acknowledge if a guy was attractive, she wasn't attracted to them since they usually had kind of shitty personalities. Puberty sucks, huh.

"What if he doesn't want to sit with us?" Kyoka asked critically, not super interested in spending a whole lunch period listening to the girls talk to a boy who probably wouldn't contribute much to the conversation.

"He's a boy our age! Why wouldn't he sit with a table full of girls?" Mina questioned enthusiastically, being the total opposite of Kyoka's quiet minimalist responses.

"Maybe he's gay."  Kyoka suggested, turning to Mina who completely ignored her, as Mina veered off towards her route to walk home and Kyoka took hers.

Mina left Kyoka with one final optimistic remark about the new kid. "And he's from America! You listen to western music right? Maybe he listens to the same stuff you do!"

Kyoka rolled her eyes, thinking about how much less boring talking to Mina was when the topic was anything other than guys. Kyoka had immediately shot down the idea of shared music taste in her head. Her music taste was pretty refined, being into punk music.
