The volleyball sneakers sliding and squeaking on the court, each bounce on the ball carried out with such energy. The enthusiasm and hard work everyone put inside this gym is why I decided to volunteer as Aoba Johsai's Volleyball club manager during my Freshman year. Learning volleyball for 12 years of my life dedicating my efforts to a day that never truly came. I pondered looking down at my left wrist.
"Alright! I have an announcement boys." Yelled the coach, his voice echoing through the gym catching the players attention.
"This is y/n (nickname), she will be your new manager starting this week. Welcome her accordingly." Said Emi. As the current 3rd year manager held me at my shoulders standing behind me.
"I look forward to working with you and getting to know you all! I'm here if you need any assistance." I said, raising my voice a bit more to be heard as I bowed down and smiled at them.
As practice ended, I noticed our team incomplete. "Emi senpai, is our team complete today?". "No, the team captain had to get his knee checked due to an injury from overworking. But don't worry he'll be back in time to meet you before our first practice match." Emi answered, both of us admiring how hard working the team was.
As practice came to a close for the day everyone looked overworked and sweaty. But still had the determination gleaming in each of their eyes.
"Y/n (nickname), do you have any background knowledge on volleyball?" Iwaizumi confronted, nearing the end of practice.
"I played volleyball quite often as a child and grew up as an exceptional player, I was told by my former teams. But now..." hiding my left wrist at my back.
"I took a break." I said.
"Ohh, that's pretty impressive. What was your junior high team?" Iwa senpai extending the conversation.
"Saansa rawatchi. I originally played as their setter." Feeling a bit embarrassed knowing the reactions that were about to come.
The other boys turned their heads, wide eyed and shocked, as they were gathering their stuff from the gym floor eying me down.
"Saansa Rawatchi?! They are hard core and known for being a solid as a team. Which is why they always won their matches!" A spiky haired onion looking boy informed everyone. "It's why they were known as the best girls junior volleyball team in the whole prefecture." Kunimi added nonchalantly sounding uninterested.
"Do you know who y/n l/n is from your team??" Someone farther from the back asked fascinated.
A blushing embarrassed look on my face came as soon as he mentioned my name. 'What am I supposed to tell them. The disappointing looks on their faces when they find out I wasn't able to pursue the sport?? It can't be helped with my reputation can it?' Unsure about what to say. I looked down on my feet, feeling the need to hide my wrist even more. "Uhm...uh" the feeling of hesitance in my voice.
"It was like she disappeared off the face of the earth. But I don't get it..." Matsukawa said.
"She earned such an amazing title for herself, only to just quit at the sport." Huffed hanamaki.
'I knew it. How could they understand knowing the pressure of this situation.' Kicking my mind thinking of what to say or how to break the ice. "Actually I am-" getting cut off by the coach.
"L/n! Can you come here for a second..?" The coach called out. Me, being the flustered girl I was, in front of the team that seemed to take such an interest in my old junior high self. I just stood there. Like a sitting duck.
"L/n..??" Coach called out a second time.
As all the player's eyes lit up, exchanging a look that had their eyes popping and jaw down. Switching from myself to the coach. Then settled on me.
"HUUHH?!?" They exclaimed."Their eyes...are so scary! Why are they looking at me like that?' Jogging to the coach "I- uhh... sorry, what was it that you needed?" Trying my best to ignore what felt like a million eyes on me. Emi slightly chuckling, knowing who I was from the beginning. She smiled at me.
... CLOSING TIME (7pm) ...
Closing up the doors to the gym, still feeling the pit in my stomach fill up with shivers from that intense moment.
"What was I thinking trying to run" I sigh, accidentally dropping the keys 'clack!' "Great..." Before bending down, a hand grabbed the keys of the floor before I could.
"Hey that isn't-" I stopped and turned to the tall brown haired boy towering over me. I scan him from bottom to top, meeting his eyes.
"Like what you see? Y/n-chan?" Hé said with a cheeky grin. Scanning me from top to bottom, to my eyes again.
'O-Oikawa Tohru..'
Once again, we froze, not looking away from each other's eyes.
*I created y/n'a juniors high school and the current 3rd year manager of Aoba Johsai.*
Let me know what you think of the story. If it was too draggy for the first chapter or if I should make things more interesting.
