Chapter 1

I wake up, immediately dreading the day ahead of me. It's the first day I have to go back to school since my dad passed away one week ago.

My dad and I had been really close until a year before he died, he had a stroke. He lost his mind as a result and drank himself into a stupor. He said horrible things to me and would threaten me. I would usually hide in the bathroom until he passed out. Eventually my mom kicked him out of the house, and after that I never saw him unless I absolutely had to. The last thing I ever said to him was that I didn't love him. I feel so guilty about it and wish I could take the vicious words back. Besides the guilt though, I don't feel too sad about his death. I mean I feel sad but now at least he is in a better place. I just need to move forward with my life.

I just hate the fact that people who have never talked to me act like we are best friends just because I'm a teenager who lost a parent. A ticking time bomb in their eyes no doubt. But it's simply unavoidable I guess.

With a groan, I roll out of bed and throw on dark skinny jeans, a creamy lace long sleeve top, knee high brown boots and lastly a light pink infinity scarf. I put on light makeup and curl my long brown hair, letting it fall down my back.

I rush down the stairs, bounding into the kitchen where I find my six year old brother Ryan sitting at the table, swirling his Froot Loops around his bowl with a look of intense concentration.

"What are you doing Ry-Ry?" He looks up at me with a bright smile on his adorable face.

My brother and I look nothing alike. Besides our facial features, my brother inherited my dads blond hair and light brown eyes, where I got brown hair and stormy gray eyes. He has an olive skin tone whereas mine competes with vampires in its paleness.

"I'm trying to make a whirlpool for my fruit loops" he replies in a 'duh' sort of tone. I laugh and ruffle his hair as I walk by grabbing some fruit. He furiously rubs his hair down.

"Rose, I told you I'm a big boy now. You can't ruffle my hair like that!" I resist the urge to roll my eyes. He says this while wearing SpongeBob pajamas.

"Okay kid! Whatever you say." I reply taking a bite of my fruit. Suddenly a car honks outside. I shove the rest of the fruit in my mouth and pick my backpack off the ground, slinging it over my shoulder.

"Remember, when mom wakes up, be polite." My mom has been working two jobs to take care of the family, resulting in her not getting home until late. I don't want to Ryan being his usual annoying self when she's so exhausted.

"Yeah, yeah" Ry mumbles as he takes a bite of his Froot Loops. As I run past him to the door I make sure to ruffle his hair again, grinning as I hear his shouts of complete following me out the door. I hop into the car waiting in my driveway and turn to face my best friend.

"Hey honey. How are you? Are you depressed? Suicidal? Are you taking your meds?" Lux questions. I stare at her with a straight face. She bursts out laughing. "Oh God, you should see your face." as she continues to chuckle I wonder, not for the first time, why she is friends with me.

With her blonde hair, blue eyes and super skinny figure (despite the fact that she eats like a pig) she is the definition of a popular cheerleader. You know, the ones who are all about spreading school spirit, and are unbelievably perky? Yeah, that's her, and she acts the part as well. Well, besides her sarcasm that rivals even my own. She could rule the school yet she stays at the bottom of the social ladder with me. I'm what you would call a social reject.

Ever since the most popular girl in school Summer Shields decided to make me her number one victim, I have been out casted. I used to be good friends with her, until I discovered what a horrible person she is. Unfortunately, she decided she was done being friends with me at the same time so all of my old friends turned against me. She said that I was a freak with "daddy issues". And after a particulary embarrassing incident where I broke down and had a panic attack at lunch in front of everyone, people started believing her.

From then on it was a downward spiral from rude comments behind my back to 'accidental tripping'. I snapped out of my daydream to Lux talking to me.

"Honestly lover, you're being dramatic. Nobody even knows what happened. For some strange reason you just think they do."

"Okay, okay. I just don't need anymore drama." We arrive at school 10 minutes later. We hop out of the car and enter Fairland high school. I say goodbye to Lux and head off to my first class.

Right as I'm about to arrive I'm stopped by none other than Summer and two of her minions.

"Well, well, well, look who we have here. It's the school freak." She sneers. I look down and try to take deep breaths. Needless to say it doesn't work very well.

"If I am such a freak why are you talking to me? Wouldn't that destroys the perfect image you have?" she flushes and takes a step closer to me.

"Now listen here you little bi-" A low voice cuts her off.

"Now Summer, is that anyway to talk to someone?" Enter Noah Stone, the schools player. He has a reputation for getting into fights. He has an even bigger reputation with the female population of Fairland High. And I don't blame them. With dark brown eyes, inky black hair that is styled like what could only be described as 'bed head', and a toned body for girls to drool over, even I find myself blushing a bit.

He raises an eyebrow at me as his arm snakes around Summers waist. Her expression of malice instantly morphs into one of innocence. She cuddles up to him and I resist the urge to gag. They aren't even dating. They just use each other when they are bored. Gross, right?  "It is if the person deserves it." Noah nods at that and my heart sinks. He gives his trademark smirk as she reaches up and whispers something in his ear that is undoubtably suggestive.

"Sure, let's go. Later scarf girl."

"Yeah, later freak. I have better things to do. Well a better person to do." She grins sickeningly.

Noah and Summer take off down the hall leaving me to enter class 10 minutes late.

After being reprimanded I slink to my seat in the back. I can't help but feel slightly disappointed at the fact that he has been going to school here for three years yet still doesn't know my name.

Like he would, a voice in my head says, they call you a social outcast for a reason. I go through my classes, taking notes while others doze all. Before I know it the bell is ringing for lunch.

I walk down the hall planning on meeting Lux in the library to eat when a hand reaches out and pulls me into the janitors closet, closing the door behind me.

AN: Well that's it. It will pick up in pace later in the story I promise. Please comment and review to give me feedback. Sorry it's short, but like I said this is my first book!
