"Right here's good, thanks."

The taxi driver brought the car to a stop on the side of the busy LA street, right in front of my hotel. I passed the wad of money I pulled out of my pocket up to the driver and he extended his hand upward over his shoulder to grab it.

As the taxi driver pulled off, I observed the exterior of the large building that was amongst other large buildings in this concrete jungle called Downtown Los Angeles. Directly ahead of me was the large glowing neon sign that read HOTEL CORTEZ. I grabbed the handle of my suitcase and began pulling it behind me as I opened one of the double doors that led into the lobby.

The lobby was separated into two floors. A few feet to my left was the reception desk, and upstairs was the bar. I was mesmerized by the skylight that ran across the ceiling, along with the three very large chandeliers. This place had me in awe... but at the same time, I felt creeped out by the emptiness. The silence.

Ding! I rang the bell that sat on the desk and it seemed to echo throughout the entire empty space. More silence followed. My eyes darted around the lobby as I gently tapped my foot on the carpet with my hands on my hips.

"So you're just gonna leave, Aspen?"

"Not forever. I just need time. Goddammit, give me some time!"

The door behind the desk finally opened after what felt like an eternity. "Have you made a reservation?" An older lady with big ol' glasses on slowly hobbled over in front of me.

"Yes

"Last name?"

"Wallace."

"Sign here, please." She lifted a hand and pointed to the sign in sheet that was placed in a binder along with tons of others.
