It took me a minute but I found Kohl holding two glasses of whatever drink he chose tonight. Anger was written on his face all laid out for anyone to see.
I stumbled my way over to Kohl. When I reached him I grabbed one of the glasses out of his hands, threw my head back and downed the whole drink in one big gulp. I shyly smiled up at Kohl who still glanced angrily at me under his eyelashes.
He was tapping his foot impatiently waiting for an explanation as to who my dance partner was. I didn't say anything. If he wanted to stay quiet then I could too, and I always win that game.
After five minutes of staring at each other Kohl finally broke.
"Who was he!" Kohl blurted out.
"No one just a new friend."
"Don't you play all innocent with me. I saw you getting all buddy buddy with him."
Buddy buddy, who even says that anymore. I looked Kohl up and down. His fists were closed, knuckles as pale as a ghost. His arms were stiff against his sides. He stood taller, back straight, head high. Not to mention that terrible toe tap that he won't stop doing.
I sighed, "He's no one Kohl. He just asked me to dance that's all. And then he got all creepy and disappeared."
"No Lex you slut! You were dancing and grinding your ass against him! That doesn't make it seem like nobody to me!"
My jaw dropped he just called me a slut. Lorelai, Jessie, and August picked that moment to show up. They heard what Kohl said. August's face was twisted. His brows were furrowed, lips parted. His breath came in ragged pants as he walked closer to us. As he got closer I could see his hand balled up in a fist. Five feet... Four feet... Two feet. He was standing right in front of Kohl now. They stared right at each other.
One second everything was normal, the next Kohl was bending over clutching his bloody face. August punched his so hard that Kohl's nose was dislocated from what I could tell and bleeding.
"Don't you ever say that to her again," August seethed.
I wanted to laugh so bad but that would only make Kohl feel worse. I hope he regrets what he said because I wouldn't be able to live without him in my life. I reached up and touched the diamond necklace around my neck. I went back to when times were much simpler.
When Kohl and I would run around my yard throwing the football. When my mom taught us how to make cookies one Christmas when we were eight. But that was a different time and what seemed to be a different world.
I looked down at Kohl, still bent over clutching his nose. My eyes saddened when I looked at him. I scanned the rest of my friends' faces. They were all stone cold pissed. I felt sorry for Kohl.
"You didn't wait for me," Kohl sadly muttered. "I wanted to dance with you and you left me and for who, some random dude."
"I know and I'm sorry Kohl but you called me a slut and I'm not a slut. You know that. I know that. They know that." I said pointing to August, Jessie, and Lorelai.
"I know and I'm sorry I was just hurt," he whispered softly.
I've never heard his voice this meek before.
"Don't leave me Lex. I'm so sorry."
I reached down and wrapped my arms around his torso.
"I forgive you Kohl. You're my best friends I don't know what I'd ever do without you. Let me fix your nose."
I placed my hands. One on his nose and the other around the back of his head.
"This is going to hurt. okay?"
