~LATER THAT DAY~
“Hey, Sawyer can I—?” my question gets cut short when I walk into the boy’s locker room and find kissing a freshman as she struggles to escape his strong grip. “SAWYER!”
“WHAT?” he let’s her go and she drops to the floor dead.
“WHY? WHY WOULD YOU KILL HER?”
“I DON’T KNOW! I GOT BORED!”
“SO YOU KILL SOMEONE BECAUSE YOU’RE BORED?”
“…Okay. Now you’re just making it sound bad.”
“BECAUSE IT IS BAD! YOU JUST KILLED AN INNOCENT F*CKING GIRL!”
“Joey, stop yelling before somebody comes in and sees a dead girl lying on the f*cking ground!” Shane yells as he rushes over to the lifeless body.
“Sawyer, can I speak to you for a moment?”
“Are you going to kill me?”
“Boy, if you don’t get your ass over hear…”
“Fine. I’ll oblige.” I walk towards the shower with Sawyer following closely behind me as we leave Shane in the locker area to do his thing. “Joey, if this is about the girl—”
“No this is not about her. Shane’s reviving her. This is about us.”
“Us?”
“Yes us. I’ve gotten the chance to read over your journal and it’s nothing like I thought it would be. I thought you were just this really big douche lord who mercilessly stabbed people in the faces because you’re a heartless monster.”
“You really need to learn how to sugar coat, dude.”
“But,” I continue. “You’re not. Actually you’re just like me. You struggle with the idea of life and death and you actually do feel bad about killing people. I know you felt horrible when you killed Nyx.”
“Nyx…you read about her?” he’s trying to hide his emotions but his cracking voice is showing me the tears he’s trying to swallow down.
“Yes. I read about Nyx and I am so sorry, Sawyer.”
“I don’t want your pity. I did the deed and I deserve to feel the way that I feel.”
“This is not pity. This is empathy. I know what you’re going through and I feel the same way you feel. You feel like shit doesn’t you?”
“Dog shit.”
“We feel like pure dog shit and we don’t deserve to feel this way. We’re good people with a good heart but with a bad soul. It’s not our fault that we can’t control our deadly actions so don’t you ever for a second get to thinking you deserve to feel like shit because you don’t”
“Joey. I killed my best friend. I slit her throat and dropped her out of a tree.”
“Sawyer. I killed my best friend, too. I stabbed her in her chest over and over again with a kitchen knife.”
“I killed the neighbor’s dog when I was 7 because he bit me.”
“I killed the neighbor’s cat when I was 5 because she scratched me.”
“I killed my tutor.”
“I killed my teacher.”
“I the middle school hall monitor.”
“I killed a student-teacher last year.”
“I killed a janitor at the community gym.”
“I killed the maid at my aunt’s house.”
“I killed the—”
“I’ve revived a whole family of baby birds when their nest fell out of a tree. I win! Let’s go! The bell rang two minutes ago!” Shane interrupts our little competition. He walks out of the locker room with Sawyer and I trailing behind him.
“No matter what,” I whisper to Sawyer. “It doesn’t matter if you killed five people or five hundred people. Just remember you are a human being not a monster.”
He gives me the most genuine smile I have ever seen displayed on his face as we walk to the buses waiting for us outside. Even though there is silence between us, he’s saying “Thank you” with his vibrant blue eyes.
I’m sorry that this was short and probably had so many grammar problems. I had five proof-read chapters read to go but my word doc is acting like a bitch and it won’t let me open any of my files so f*ck you, Microsoft!
