Edd and the readerLife was...alright. You never had anything in particular to complain about. You lived with a bunch of dorky but caring boys. Lately though, you were facing a bit of a conflict. Could you even call it that? You didn't know. It wasn't a conflict with your guardians though. Rather a conflict with yourself. What was your identity? Not like existential, but your gender identity.
All of your life you've lived by the confounds of only two genders. Boy or girl. You had to choose. It was hard. You dont feel like either, just separate from the binary. A loose thread apart from a dress or pants. If you weren't either, what were you? Your hands gripped on the bathroom sink like your life depended on it. You looked at your reflection, utterly frustrated with yourself. Why couldn't you just be normal?
A knock resounded from outside the bathroom door. "(Y/N)? You doing okay in there? You've been in there for quite a while." A voice laced with concern asked. The voice of one of your dads, Edd. "Yeah, I'm good! I'll be out in a second!" You yelled. You took one last look at yourself in the mirror; walking to the door to open it. On the other side was the green clad man, concerned look turning into a slightly less concerned smile. "Sorry, I got lost in my own head for a second." You apologized. He patted you on the shoulder, "It's fine, I'm just glad you're not sick. Oh hey, could you feed Ringo? The other guys left to pick up some food for us. I think we're having Chinese tonight." You smiled a bit and nodded.
You stepped out of the entrance of the bathroom, letting your dad through. You walked to the kitchen grabbing the cat food, and pouring it into Ringo's plastic bowl. The cat in question ran up to you at the beckoning call of food. You pat him on the head and let him eat. You went to your room, leaving the door open if Ringo decided to follow you after eating. You flopped on your bed, letting the thoughts from earlier come back. What are you? It was a stressful question that upset you to no end. One you didn't know the answer to. Maybe the boys could help you? What if they hate you for telling them, though? Was it even worth tell them? It's so trivial, and you didn't want to waste their time with stupid questions.
Almost a half hour later, the rest of your dads came back with Chinese food. Edd brought out the fancy plates- paper plates- while Tom, Tord, and Matt set out the food for all of you to enjoy. Once you all got your servings, you sat down at the kitchen table. You began to eat when suddenly someone stole one of your shrimp. You looked up to see who the thief was, and of course, it was Tord. "Hey! Why'd you steal my food? Dont you have enough?" You jokingly scolded. Tord shrugged nonchalantly, "Dad tax, I don't make the rules." You snorted a bit, "How come 'dad tax' only applies to you? You gotta stop stealing my food!" He laughed, continuing eating, (thankfully) on his plate. The rest of dinner went on smoothly. You all talked about random stuff that you thought of.
After dinner, you threw away your plate, and your dads branched off into their own rooms. You stayed in the kitchen, snagging a fortune cookie. You opened the wrapped cookie to reveal the fortune. 'Sometimes it is best to let your loved ones guide you through tough times...' huh, that was funny. You ate the cookie and went to your room, shoving the fortune in your pocket. For a few hours, you just lay on your bed listening to music, now about 8pm. You couldn't take your mind off of that fortune though. You sat up and took it out of your pocket, examining it again. Maybe this lousy piece of paper was right. Maybe it would be best to tell one of your dads. You thought about Edd and how much he worries about you. Maybe if you come clean, he would be less worried. Worst case scenario, you'd atleast clear your mind.
You got up and went to Edds room. You took a moment to breath before gaining the courage to knock on the door. You heard footsteps patter across the floor in his room to open the door. The door swung open to reveal the man in a smeg head tshirt and some pajama pants. He smiled warmly, "Oh hey, (Y/N)! Do you need something?" He asked. "Oh, uh..yeah. can I tell you something?' You replied. "Of course! Come on in!" He stated. You went in his room and sat down on his bed next to a discarded sketchbook he probably tossed to get the door. He closed the door behind him and walked over to you, moving the sketchbook to sit next to you. "What's up, kiddo?" He inquired. "Ok, ok, before I say anything, promise you won't hate me..." You awnsered. He looked perplexed, "Now, why would I hate you, (Y/N)?" You just shrugged in response.
"Recently, I've been kinda conflicted. Not in you or the others, but in myself.." you stated. He nodded, "Why's that?" "Well, I guess it all started a few months ago, but lately its been bothering me. I don't know what I am." You said. "What you are? You're (Y/N)!" He answered. You laughed a little bit. "No, not like that, I mean- I dont know what gender I am. I dont feel like a girl, but I don't feel like a boy either. I'm kinda in this grey area separate from the two. Its kinda hard to explain, but its been bothering me." You explained. "It's okay, (Y/N). I love you no matter your gender, sexuality, shape, or size. You're still my kid. We can work through this together, alright?" He reassured. You smiled and hugged him. He hugged you back and cradled you for a few minutes. Once you two stopped the hug, he held out his hand. "To working through this together?" He asked. You grabbed his hand and nodded, "To working through this together."
