22nd June, 2020.
Alyson stared at Ian sitting beside her at the back of the church. The air at the church was damp, and she was slightly irritated at the loud and random buzzing of flies in the room; She wondered how many more hours it would take for a priest to arrive. Deciding to get married that day was a spontaneous idea, as was their ill-fated trip to Morocco which got them stuck in the strange country for months because of the corona virus pandemic.
A mere two weeks prior, while out on a hike on a mountain, Ian got on a knee to propose, and it was one of the most memorable moments of her life. She had wanted a long engagement, but he wanted them married immediately.
He won the argument, citing the fact that they were in an exotic country, so they could have a simple wedding, then an extended honeymoon, as they couldn’t travel to the states anyway.
She stared at him and smiled, though he could not see it because of the mask on her face.
“What are you staring at me like that?” he asked curiously.
“I am just imagining what I’m gonna do to you tonight,” she replied.
He blushed so hard, the color extended all the way to his neck.
“Alyson Cooper and Ian McNeil,” a young man announced.
“Yeah,” they chorused.
“You’re next,” he said, as he led them to the altar.
“Where is the priest?” Alyson curiously asked the man.
“I am the priest,” he replied simply.
Alyson and Ian exchanged an amused glance, then averted their eyes.
“I’m sorry, aren’t you too young and sexy to be a priest?” Alyson asked.
“May God have mercy on your soul,” the priest replied scandalized.
Ian could not take it anymore and burst out laughing. As they reached the altar, they faced each other and held hands as the young priest gave a short sermon on marriage.
“Do you, Ian McNeil, take Alyson Cooper as your lawfully wedded wife, to love and cherish, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?”
“I do,” Ian said. As he glanced at his future wife, he could not believe how lucky he had been. There he was, getting married to the woman he was madly in love with, in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. He had his job in New York back, and his life was back on track. He knew their lives may not be all roses and lilacs, but with Alyson by his side, he felt brave enough to face anything. In that moment, he considered himself the happiest man alive.
“And do you, Alyson Cooper, take Ian McNeil as your lawfully wedded husband, to love and cherish, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?”
“I do,” Alyson stated. For the first time in her life, she was not afraid of things that could probably happen, as her emotional scars had completely healed. She was no longer the jaded person she was a few years earlier, because her love for Ian changed that. She could not wait for what was to come.
“Now exchange your rings,” the priest said. Ian slid Alyson’s ring on her finger, a beautiful silver ring with a little emerald at the top. She brought his out, a custom made golden ring with their initials entwined on it and tried to put it on his finger, but it was much too tight.
The wedding was quickly becoming a disaster.
“I’ll have it sent back,” she reassured him hurriedly, because he was looking like he was about to cry. She placed it on his pinky instead.
“I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the –,” the priest hesitated and cleared his throat.
Alyson and Ian looked at each other skeptically as the priest continued, “You may kiss the bride,” he pronounced as he went into a serious bout of coughing.
As though by mutual agreement, Ian and Alyson held their hands tighter, and ran as fast as possible from the church. They certainly had no intention to catch whatever it was the priest had.
Before they crossed the threshold, Ian pulled her back and kissed her deeply, their first kiss as husband and wife.
