Chapter 19
I was on the bus, on the way home. I just had a really long day and all i wanted to do was run a bath and soak all the tension out. My feet were sore and frozen. My head hurt. My stomach was growling. I fantasized about ordering some pizza and putting my feet up on the coffee table while i watch some sad chick flick. I shivered. Eventhough the bus was warmer than outside, i was still freezing. I groaned.
I heard some shuffling behind me and felt the seat beside me dip. “Do you want to see something?”
I looked up, a deep frown on my face. Who the hell was this guy? “I’m sorry but i...”
“Do you like magic?” he asked, blue eyes captivating.
Another guy sat in front of us, turning to face us. He passed a deck of cards to the man beside me. I frowned in confusion. I have to say it was weird having a stranger sitting beside you and asking you a question that sounded strangely wrong. But, as the man beside slid the cards out of the box, I had to admit i was dead curious.
I glanced at the guy in front of me. He looked at his friend, solemn expression. The guy beside me shuffled the deck and i was mesmerised. I loved magic and they did not look that dangerous. Plus, how many times do you get some random stranger coming up to you and offering to show you magic?
“Yes,” i replied, softly.
He smiled and his blue eyes warmed. “Good. Pick a card.”
I took a card from the deck and he continued to shuffle it.
“Look at it. Don’t show me,” he ordered, firm but friendly.
I looked at the card discreetly, making sure his friend and him were not looking. His friend was grinning now, his brown eyes playful. I covered the card and looked at the blue-eyed man, waiting for his next instruction.
“Now, slot the card in anywhere. Okay, that’s good. So, your card is somewhere in the deck. I am not shuffling the deck. Now, take the card from the top,” he instructed. “Don’t look at it.”
I nodded, holding it tight.
“Your card is somewhere in here with me. Is that right?” he asked, smiling.
He shuffled it again, watching me all the while. I nodded, making him grin. I grinned back, not able to help it. This was actually fun and i was enjoying it.
“Is this your card?” he asked, pulling out a King of Hearts.
I shook my head, still grinning.
“What about this?” he asked, pulling out a Four of Spades.
I shook my head again. He started to look nervous.
“Maybe this?” he asked, pulling out another card that is still not mine.
I shook my head and started to get disappointed.
“Hold on, maybe i didn’t do this right,” he murmured, shuffling his cards.
I felt sorry for him and a bit annoyed that he had disturbed my quiet journey home with a total failure at an attempt with his magic trick.
“What was your card?” he asked, eyes nervous.
“Six of Hearts,” i replied dejectedly. I lifted the card in my hand, looking at it. “It’s this card.”
He looked at the card in my hand and it dawned on me. He grinned, eyes glinting mischievously as he watched the shock and disbelief on my face. He had made the card appear in my hand when i had obviously put it into the deck. That was amazing.
