After we had greeted each other, he had me sit down on one of the coffins. “So this is where you work now?” I ask as I look around once more. He then hands me a cup of tea. “This is where I've always worked, dearie. Do you remember asking your father if you could come along to my shop? This is it!”
“I had no idea you were working at a funeral parlor! So why was he hesitant on bringing me?” I questioned, mostly to myself. “Perhaps it was just because I work with the dead, who knows. He was set to bring you over just 2 days after we had discussed it, but then...”
“The day after I was taken.” I finish his sentence as I look away. “Yes, and I'm so glad you're back now. I hear you've been staying with your brother, how long has it been since you've reunited with him?” I look back over to him as I answer. “Actually I just found out about him yesterday. I was at the end of my shift when I had learned that he was alive after all. So when I heard that, I made my way over to the manor to see for myself. I just couldn't believe he had rebuilt the manor in such a short amount of time.”
“You just found out yesterday you say? Hehe, how interesting. I was surprised when I didn't see you earlier when they came.” I was now confused. “He told me he didn't want me to come in, and you knew I was still alive-”
“Of course I did, dearie. I've always known.” He says as he laughs. “Y-you've always known? But how?” I questioned. “It's a long story, my dear.”
“Do you know what had happened? I mean, apparently I was buried, but I'm right here! Aunt Francis tells me it was an open casket at my funeral. Would you know who would have dug me out and why? And how I am still here if I supposedly died? You are the only one who would know if I truly died, as it was you that I came to.” His expression turns serious, which was the first time I've ever seen him serious. He has always had a smile and had always laughed.
“Lord Phantomhive had asked me the same thing. I told him I didn't know a thing about it. Now normally I would ask for payment in order to get any information from me. Not any form of money, I have no use for the Queen's coins. But a first-rate laugh. But seeing as it's you, just this once I'll tell you for free.” I look at him in confusion.
“Your brother doesn't know this, and I want this to stay between you and me.” I nod in agreement. “Yes, you had died, but I needed to let your family know. I didn't want to bury you, I've already lost another Phantomhive, I didn't want to lose another.”
“Another Phantomhive?” I questioned, how long has he been with my family? He still looks young yet. “Your grandmother, Claudia Phantomhive.” I was shocked to say the least. “You knew my grandmother?! But you don't look that old? You still look young!”
“Hehehe. Is that what you think? Well, that's for another time. But yes, I knew her. I didn't want to lose you too. You remind me so much of her, you are so much like her. I didn't want to bury you too, but I didn't know what to do at the time. I wanted to bring you back, but how? After your funeral, I decided I was going to bring you back in some way or another.” I sat there speechless. I didn't know what to say.
“I went back and dug you out. No, I didn't place anything else in there. So when you go to dig that grave up, you will find it empty. Once I brought you back here, I started on finding ways right away to bring you back. I've tried several ways within a year, and I've finally found it. You started breathing again, but you couldn't do anything else. You couldn't open your eyes, speak or move. You didn't even have a heartbeat, but you were breathing.” I suddenly check myself for a pulse. He's right, I don't have a heartbeat!
“I came back after a full year?!” I couldn't believe it, but I have no choice to, as I really don't have a heartbeat. “Yes, and for 3 years after that I did everything I could to make sure you kept on breathing, and I helped you get your life back. I taught you how to walk again, eat, and everything else.”
“So how come I don't remember any of that? The only thing that I remember after coming here, was receiving the house I'm living at now, and finding out that my family was dead!”
“I couldn't tell you why you don't remember any of that. And the house you've been staying at was mine. I never needed it anyway, and I figured you wouldn't want to stay here any longer.” He answers. “It... Was yours? Then why have you never visited?! And why didn't you let everyone know that I was back?!”
“I wanted to wait for the right time before we met again. As for why I kept you as a secret, you still have people out there that want to harm you. If any of them ever knew about you, they'd come after you again. You don't want that to happen now, do you?”
“N-no, not at all!” I quickly answer. “Not that you can die anyway. You're already... Undead. But you wouldn't want to endure the pain all over again.”
“Do you know who they are?” I was now nervous. “I do, they're the same people that had shot you. I've just never been able to find them.” He answers.
“So then, if you were able to bring me back, would you be able to bring back my parents? And my other brother?” I asked after a while. He suddenly looks down. I can tell he was hurt. “I'm afraid I cannot. Your parents' bodies were burned to ashes. Once that happens it becomes impossible to ever bring them back.” His voice cracked. I thought for sure I even saw a tear escape.
“And my brother?” I asked as I felt myself crying as well. I notice him start to tense up. Judging by his silence, I took that as the same answer as my parents. “I see, but how was he burned?” I asked quietly. “He wasn't. I saved his body just before he could be burned.”
“Wait, what?! Ciel never mentioned anything about there being a fire! He only told me that our brother was killed right in front of him! Then he managed to escape and killed everybody that was there, and that was when he met Sebastian!” I was even more confused than ever.
“I'm afraid this is where I'll have to ask for my payment. I've already answered 6 additional questions for free. That's more than I've ever given to anyone without a charge.” He smiles. “Right, of course. Um... Okay, why did Shakespeare only write in ink?
Pencils confused him — 2B or not 2B?” He busted out laughing. His laughter was so contagious, I ended up laughing with him.“Okay I have one more! Never leave alphabet soup on the stove and then go out. It could spell disaster.” Pretty soon the whole building was shaking from his laughter, I could have sworn I heard something crash from outside. It sure doesn't take much to get him to laugh, does it?
“Alright, my lady. I'll tell you everything you need to know.” He says after he started to calm down. His expression turning serious again. “Before Sebastian and Lord Phantomhive left the building your brothers were kept in, they had burned the place down. I had rescued your brother's body before it could be burned without them knowing-”
“Hold on! So you knew where they were at the whole time?! Why didn't you save them?!” I was now furious. “Now, now. Let's not get too hasty, let me finish... I didn't know they were there the whole time. I had just found a lead to where they were at. By the time I got there, I was too late to save your brother. I assume you know about Sebastian, no?”
“That he's a demon? I figured that out the second I met him. I wasn't very happy about it either.” I admit. “You're a clever one. When I went for the body, I had realized Lord Phantomhive had made a contract with the demon. As soon as they started burning the place down was when I left.”
“So then, if you took his body, is he alive again too?” I asked hopefully. “Lady (Y/N). Before I tell you any more you must keep this secret between us. Nobody else must know about it yet. Do you understand?” His voice was stern.
My breath becomes stuck in my throat again. He was dead serious, something I've never seen him be before. It was very... Unusual. “Y-yes. I promise I won't ever say a word, about any of this.”
