THREE YEARS BEFORE

"Are you nervous about tonight?" My mother asked me from the front seat of our car.

"Yeah." I stammered, my arms shaking. Today I was going to a piano competition, where I would be competing against other pianists from all around England.

"Don't be sad Natawie!" My little sister patted my arm.

"Natalie, you're going to do great!" My dad said encouragingly. My mother nodded her agreement, and started talking about her first piano competition. She told me how nervous she was when she got up on stage facing the thousands of people who came to watch the competition in London.

Just then, a car came swerving out of nowhere, coming straight towards us. My mother screamed, and then everything went dark.

When I woke up, I found myself in a hospital bed.  A kind-looking nurse stood next to my bed, filling out forms on her clipboard.  Her eyes met mine, and she smiled.

"HI sweet heart.  How are you feeling?"

I cleared my throat. "Fine.  Why am I here?" I croaked.

"Well dearie, you got into a car accident.  Fortunately, you have no injuries.  Just a few bruises."

"Okay. That's... good." I mumbled, not really sure what to say.  Just then, a doctor rushed in, and whispered into the nurses ear.  Her face fell, and she looked at me with a sad compassion.

"Hon, I'm really sorry.  Your parents, well... they didn't survive the accident."

PRESENT TIME

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP

My hand slammed down on the alarm clock, turning off the obnoxious noise.

I groaned and turned over in my bed.  It's Monday again.  Hooray.

I turned on my morning playlist and started getting ready for school. I ran a brush through my long caramel colored hair, and curled it loosely. I threw on a pair of dark-wash skinny jeans, an oversized cream sweater, and a pair dark brown riding boots.  I cleared my desk of all of my textbooks, sweeping them into my backpack.

The accident happened when I was fourteen, and my aunt, my father's sister, took me in to live with her and her family of four. They lived in Mullingar, Ireland, which was 400 miles from my home in Cambridge, England. Not only had I just been orphaned, but I also had to move away from my school, my friends, and everything I have ever known.

I walked downstairs into the extravagant kitchen, where the smell of pancakes filled the room.

"Good morning Natalie! How did you sleep?" my Aunt Sam asked.

"Um, I slept fine." I responded, as I grabbed a glass for my orange juice. I was sitting down at the bar sipping my drink when my cousin Skyler skipped into the kitchen.

Skyler was eighteen, a year older than me. She was beautiful, with waist-length wavy blond hair, icy blue eyes, and a sparkling smile. Even her Irish accent was perfect. Today she wore a pair of white skinny jeans, and a blue and white striped batwing shirt.

She flashed me a pretty smile, and gave her mom a hug. "Good morning everyone!"

I rolled my eyes, in a way that she couldn't see. She was so energetic in the morning. It was annoying.

Aunt Sam smiled and I mumbled, "Morning."

"Where's Addie?" I asked. Addison was my younger sister, we called her Addie for short. She was a seven year old angel, I loved her to pieces.

"She's still sleeping; she doesn't need to go to school until 8:30." Aunt Sam answered.

"Oh, right."

"C'mon girls, speed it up! You need to catch the bus in five minutes!" Sam clapped her hands together, getting our attention.

Skyler shoveled the pancakes into her mouth, and I rushed to brush my teeth. We said a quick goodbye to Sam, and ran out the door. I hopped back in again to grab my iPod, and turned on my favorite album, 'Take me Home'. I took a deep breath, and walked out into the brisk fall air.
