“I love you mom, goodnight,” I said softly as I wrapped my arms around her. My mother was, admittedly, taller than I was, but only by a few inches. Growing up, I wanted to be taller than her, but a couple years ago, I just stopped caring. Plus, I wasn’t self-conscious about my height; 5’7” was decent enough for me.She pulled me into an embrace as she kissed my cheek, “I love you too, buttercup.” I pulled away, crinkling my nose at the nickname she gave me. When I was a toddler, I had vibrant gold hair and I always played around in our garden, which is why she gave me the name. Now, it was a medium brown shade, apart from the blonde streak I gave myself last year.
Chuckling, she ruffled my hair and turned around, dimming the kitchen light. I smiled at her before I made my way upstairs.
When I stepped into my room, a cold gust enveloped me, causing me to shiver. I was wearing a turquoise and blue tie-dye hoodie with white kanji across the chest, so it shouldn’t have been as cold as it was.
Noticing that the cold air was coming from an open window, I shook my head at myself and shut it. “I can’t believe I left it open again,” I muttered, silently thanking the fact that there was a screen to keep the bugs out. Once the window was sealed to keep the draft from coming in, I realized that a familiar reflection seemed to be missing from the printless glass. Turning around, I registered that my pride flag was starting to come off the wall again.
“Oh for fucks sake,” I groaned as I stepped around the bed and grabbed the duct tape from my nightstand. I ripped a piece off and stuck the offending corner back to the wall. Making a mental note to go get some thumbtacks in the morning, I put the duct tape back down and flopped back onto my bed, sighing heavily as I dangled my feet off the edge.
I slipped my sweatpants off and dropped them onto the floor, pulling my legs up and finally under the covers. I felt a smile tug at the corner of my lips as I began to drift off.
