Can't Take the Heat Huh?

It was three weeks later when the next attack came.

Sky and I were sitting in art class, in the very same seats as our first class together. Mrs. Frost had been teaching the class how to prepare a canvas for watercolour. She's dead now, most of the teachers are.

Shit went down to say the least. They had come during school, the middle of the day, too. I'm sure they did it then just to fuck with us.

Trean and his cult of mutants had come and destroyed the town. They tore apart everything in their path, leaving destruction in their wake. We had fought back, of course. It didn't help much, if anything it added to the collateral.

It wasn't just Vampires and Werewolves, though. Unbeknown to me there was another party itching to get involved. Hunters.

They normally despise my kind, but they hate Vampires more.

After Trean and his new breed of monsters cleared out, we were left with a destroyed town and a mountain of questions. Most of which we don't know the answers to, but we're getting there.

Human news crews had swarmed the town following the battle. There was no way that we could stay.

At the moment, what is left of the pack is hiding out in a Hunter safe-house. The Hunters aren't too happy that we're here, but we have no where else to go. There's 8 of us left. Ruby and Toby made it; so did Star, unfortunately Luca didn't. She's not handling it well. Sky and I are both alive. The other three survivors are Elder Kendra, a dude named Jack and his mate Lois.

They're pretty cool, well, except for Kendra... She's a heinous bitch.

"Devi! Come quick!" Sky yells, her voice frantic.

I force myself up out of the cot-like bed I had been lying in and come back to the present. I tended to do that a lot these days. My shared room is small and grey, the bare wood walls adding to the gloom.

I wind my way through the halls until I find my mate beckoning me into the living-room-turned-strategising-room. Like most of the house the walls are bare, distressed timber coupled with faded brown carpets and worn furniture. There is a small window on the far wall that allows the dull light from outside in.

Gathered around a round dining table, worn and stained from the years, is what's left of my pack and three Hunters.

"What's up?" I ask the group, slightly nervous. The last time the Hunters had come 'round it was with news of more death and destruction.

"We found your family," a tall, dark haired Hunter informs me. Their voice is low.

"They're alive?" I question. The Hunter nods, I nod back.

At another time I would have been happy that they were found, but at the moment it would be better if they were dead. If they were dead they wouldn't be part of this anymore, they'd be safe.

"Where are they?"

"Does it matter?" Tobias cuts in, "They can't see you, we can't tell them anything."

"You think I don't know that, dickwad?" I say acidly.

"Both of you cut it out! Tobias, your input is not needed here; Devlyn, that last part was unnecessary," a redheaded, female Hunter declares while glaring at Toby and I.

"As I was about to say," the male Hunter continues icily, "Devlyn's family has been found and at last notice they were hiding out in the church with a few other families."

"Are we gonna get them? I mean, we can't tell them but can't we help them at least?" I say slightly frantically.

"No. There are human aid workers on the way to Cedar Bluffs as we speak," the female Hunter answers, there is no room for compromise in her tone.

The room is silent for longer than it should be. The only thing I hear for the next minute or so is quiet breathing.

"Is that all you wanted to tell me?" I ask, breaking the silence.

"Yes, that is all," the other Hunter in the room answers. She has dark hair and dark skin with large hazel eyes. Her mouth is pulled into a frown.

Another silence fills the room like water.

I glance out the tiny window, even the sky seems sad these days. Everything's going to shit and we can't do anything.

"So what do we do now?" Sky muses aloud.

"I don't think there's anything we can do," Lois pipes up.

"We could fight," Toby suggests, his voice low and intent.

"Oh yes, because that went well last time," I mumble sarcastically and the Alpha glares at me.

"Then what do you suggest we do, Devi? Hmm? You obviously have a way better handle on this situation than the rest of us, so what do you think we should do?" Tobias yells, his voice breaking at points. I shrink back at the sudden noise, dipping my head slightly.

The realisation hits me, I am better off than anyone else in this room aside from the Hunters. Heck, they might actually be worse off than me too. I have my mate, my family are safe, I'm not obligated to lead everyone. I have it easy compared to my pack mates. My stomach turns sour as these thoughts set in.

"I'm sorry," I croak out, "I didn't..."

Unfortunately I don't have time to finish my sentence as just as I'm about to the quiet is broken by the sound of a window shattering into a million pieces and a harsh beeping.

The Hunters jump into action, pulling weapons from hidden holsters. The members of my pack are slightly slower to respond; although to our credit, none of us have been sleeping well lately.

The beeping continues, it reminds me of something that I can't quite put my finger on it.

No words are spoken, but the redheaded Hunter volunteers herself to check out the source of the sound.

She stalks down the cramped hallway leading to the back rooms. She stops in front of the first door on the left; lining herself up with it and kicks it down, the wood giving way with a groan.

Her head disappears inside the door frame for a split second before it appears again and she shakes her head.

All the while the beeping continues.

The hairs on the back of my neck stand up as she approaches the only other door in this hallway.

Her hand closes around the handle. There is a quiet click as the door swings open.

I suddenly realise what the beeping reminds me of.

There is no time to warn the others before the bomb goes off.

Sudden heat and noise fills the room and the shock wave blows us back.

I hear shrill screams and groans fill the air.

A second bomb explodes and I am thrown back again. Pain erupts on the back of my head and the last thing I see is the room on fire.
