Chapter 11

Rain’s POV

“Fiancé?” his dad asked looking at me with a smile. “Why don’t we talk inside?”

We went in and let me tell you, it was GORGEOUSE! Everything was beautiful, from the black marbled floor to the huge chandelier. We sat down at the couch, Tristan and I sitting side by side while his father in front of us with a cup of coffee.

“Rain, this is my Dad; Steven Rodgers.”

“So you’re engaged and yet your still studying?” he asked.

“Actually Dad, we aren’t really in a relationship. We’re just pretending.” Tristan explained.

“Pretending? Please explain.”

Tristan took a deep breath and told him all about our parent’s decision to get married and our plan to get them back together. Now that had him looking at us like we’ve lost our minds or something.

“I appreciate your help but your mother made it crystal clear that she wants nothing to do with me.”

“But you still love her right?” I asked.

“Sometimes, love is not enough for two people to be together.” He responded while looking at the portrait hanging above the fire place.

It was their wedding picture. His arms were around her waist as they shared a kiss. You could see the love between them making me think why they had a divorce.

“If you don’t mind me asking. Why did you separate?” I asked and both of them stiffed.

“It was all my fault.” He started as he stood up and faced the portrait, looking at it with such happiness. “I was too focused on work thinking of losing money since the company was going down, investors were backing out and deals not closing. I was too focused on it that I didn’t realize I was losing what’s more important. Tristan’s mom and I had an argument and I said things I shouldn’t have, our argument got so heated that I hit her. I walked out and didn’t come home for a week. I was disappointed with myself for shouting and hitting at her that day, I wanted things to be back the way they were. I regretted everything I’ve done. I went back home and apologized to your mother but she gave me the cold shoulder. I tried and tried every day but nothing worked until we slept in separate rooms. I can’t blame her for hating me. I said things that hurt her deeply, if I was in her shoes right now, I too wouldn’t forgive myself. But I still love her.” he whispered the last part but I heard it.

Tears were forming in his eyes but he held it back and hid it with a smile.

“I’m sorry kids but I can’t help you. If both of them are in love with each other, then I’m happy for them.” He forced a smile and looked at Tristan.

“If your mother is happy then, I’m happy for her.” he added and Tristan stood up and walked out the door with a loud bang.

“I’ve failed Tristan as a father. I’ve failed to give him a complete family. Tristan was 9 when we had a divorce. He always asked why his mother and I no longer live in the same house, why her mother always cries at night. I’m a failure.” He sighed.

“You’re not a failure Mr. Rodgers, you just lost sight of what’s more important. I can see the look in your eyes when you stare at your picture and I can see your love for her. Tristan doesn’t see you as a failure as well, he looks up to you and he wants you and his mom to be back together. He loves you Sir.” I smiled as he looked at me.

“If you didn’t tell me you and my son are just pretending, I would have been proud to show you off to my business partners as my son’s fiancé. He got himself not just a beauty but a kind hearted and wise woman. I just hope my son sees it. Your father is lucky to have a daughter like you.”

I looked at him feeling myself start to tear up wishing my dad was like him. I wish my dad would be proud of me like he was. My dad never introduced me to any of his business partners, heck not even bring me to his office. Is my dad even proud to call me his daughter?

“Rain, can you please call Tristan and convince him to stay for lunch? I wish to spend time with my son and get to know you better.” He smiled and I nodded, walking out to see Tristan leaning on his car.

“What did my dad tell you?” he asked.

“He wanted us to stay for Lunch.”

“Do you want to?” He asked looking at me.

“He’s your Dad Tristan, he misses you.” I smiled.

“I don’t know Rain. I love my dad but… it’s the first time I heard the reason why he left us. He hit my mom, his wife, I can’t look at him the same way I used to.”

“Your dad regrets everything he did, he wants to be the father you want. He might have said he doesn’t want to help us but I saw the love in his eyes whenever he talks about your mom. I’m sure we can convince him to fight for her.” I smiled.

He looked at me for a while and gave a forced nod. I grab his hand and pulled him toward the house. I wish Tristan’s parents get back together, not just because I don’t want our parents to be married but because his dad still loved his mom and there’s a chance. I believe love is enough for people to be together.
