The women sat out in the front of her little shack gazing off into to black forest when out of no where a sound of rustling leaves came about to her ears. Her head snapped up and she looked with sharp eyes around her. She could have sworn she saw something... It came again. The same rustle of leaves. This was the first time this had ever happened to Anabel and she was quite shaken by it. She had the feeling of being watched. She- being smart and good witted- knew that this was no ordinary sound and decided to investigate. She slowly got to her feet and pulled out her walking cane.

Mary sat next to me scared out of her mind was the creepy women came at us. She was five and didn't know how to react.

Mother had let her go off and pick berries at the edge of the woods. I didn't think she would go this far in so I followed her. She had know idea I was behind her before I made myself noticed. I told her that ma would scold both of us for going up here and that a beating would be waiting for her when she arrived back home. At that she started crying and not being careful where she stepped made quite a racket. So here we are.

I quickly grabbed up the startled Mary and sprinted back to the path where I knew was safe. I could hear Mary start to whine in protest so I covered her little mouth with my hand. Once we were back on the path I let her go.

"John! You know how I don't like bein handled in such a way. What you think mama would say if she saw you doin that. I know exactly what she would do she would spank you."

"I an't see mama anywhere around here. If you know whats best for you, you just keep your mouth shut about this whole thing. Or else you and me are going to get a wopping."

"John you know I an't like no woppings."

"Well then keep quite."

And so Mary and John did. They never spoke a word not one to anyone. Not even each other. They acted like it had never happened. Life pasted slowly and the next time John even thought about the little old lady up in the woods what when he came of age. Mary was at a solid age of 14 by then and had many other things occupy her mind at that point. But not John. After his coming of age he couldn't get her out of his head. So one sunny day he asked Mary to come out to the back to see him.

"Mary?" He had asked.

"What is it John?" Mary had grown up a great deal and was just on her way to meet a young man when John had pulled her away. Quite irritated she smoothed out her dress and crossed her arms over it.

"Remember that day when you were 5 and we saw that lady up in that house?"

Mary stuck her noise up at the thought. "Yes I do remember that and now that I look back on it I was quite childish. I know now not to do such things." With that thought Mary held her head up high and walked out of the yard and up to the road.

John had been discouraged by Mary. He was hoping she had the same opinion on the manner. Either was he was not going to sit here withering away when there was a mystery to be discovered...
