Since Eliana and her twin sister, Carmen, were toddlers they were opposites. Carmen would be loud and want to play and talk to everyone, whereas Eliana was perfectly contempt staying in her room playing with her toys on her own.

As they got older, Eliana enjoyed the small things in life. She was an introverted kid who always finished her homework on time and enjoyed spending time with her best friends Elena and Bonnie. Carmen prioritized her social life over school, usually ditching to go shopping with Caroline, which often resulted in the twins parents being called into the school. Carmen always felt like something was missing from her life and she was meant for a different path. When she was thirteen, Carmen managed to get in a fight with another girl in her class and even though she had no prior fighting experience or lessons in martial arts she found herself winning. Eliana couldn't care any less for violence and fighting, she didn't like seeing people get hurt and would want to help them as opposed to cause them harm.

It was at this point Serena and Matius Maroto revealed to the girls that their family was derived from a long line of highly skilled supernatural hunters. Their seven time great grandfather had been bestowed upon witches to complete a mission to eradicate vampires off this earth and when he and his wife bore six children they inherited his genes of being hunters. Many a moon later this led to Matius and his twin daughters being hunters and him wanting to train them to carry on their legacy.

Eliana was never keen on the idea of being a hunter, she never had the instincts of wanting to hurt of even kill, even if the creatures they were to hunt were already dead. Carmen, on the other hand, felt like things starting falling into place once her father told her of her hunter gene. She finally understood why she always felt so energetic and active.

Over the girls teen years Carmen and Eliana spent the majority of their time training, getting strong and learning how to defend themselves. Eliana didn't take pride in her skills and only did what her father told her to, whereas Carmen blossomed in the training program, she aced every test and was well on her way to becoming a very skilled hunter. Eliana decided that when she turned eighteen she would stop training, leave the hunting to her sister and her parents.

When the girls got to sixteen, Bonnie revealed the Eliana that she thinks she's a witch and that's when Eli revealed she was a hunter, much to her own dismay. This led to the girls becoming extremely close and Eliana opened up about her lack of interest in the world of supernatural, which became even more of a issue for the young girl when the Salvatore's moved into town bringing with a whole lot of drama which the Maroto twins found themselves entangled in.
