Sometimes I wonder, why do we have to go through twelve years of school? Why can't we just get the basics out of the way and move on? Well, I wondered that yesterday when I started my final semester of high school. Today I'm not questioning it anymore. Today I'm glad I'm in school.
It began three days ago, when our alpha female passed into the next life. Of course she was no longer in charge, having passed that duty on to her children, but she was revered for standing by our alpha during the war and helping our community flourish in the aftermath.
Two days ago her autobiography was published. It was of course published as fiction. No humans would have been able to understand the implications and not come away terrified. But we know. A recounting of her entire life. Published from her deathbed, prompted by her children who wanted her memory to be engraved in our minds. Not just as the wolf who led us back from the brink of death after the war, but as the wolf that kept us alive during it.
Yesterday, I started my final semester of high school. I thought it would be as boring as the past three years. Learning in a crowded classroom, one teacher to thirty students. Surrounded by humans. Fortunately, the day before a new book had been published. So an exception was made. All werewolves would get one extra class at the end of the day in place of PE (an unnecessary class for supernaturals).
Today, the class meets for the first time. In five hours I will be learning about one of the greatest kept secrets of the war.

"Alright class, settle down. You all know why you're here and you all know why this class is taking place for the first time this year. I doubt any of you haven't heard the stories and aren't anxious to learn the truth."
My teacher's voice began in a high pitched tone, but mellowed into a steady drawl. Just enough to catch our attention without having to yell.
"Now that I've got your attention, I'll begin. Today we will begin reading the autobiography of our recently deceased retired Alpha Female. It was a shock to me as well when this book was published."
She took a deep breath, letting it out slowly before continuing.
"I was alive during the war, and although I never met her, I knew people who had. I know people whose lives have been personally impacted by all the good she has done for our community. My best friend is alive today because of her. Now I myself am an avid reader so I have already read the book in full, but I don't expect this of you."
She glanced around the room, pausing on each of us. Making sure we were all paying attention. She didn't need to though, no one is going to miss this. We know how important she was, we know how to show respect.
"Through this semester we are going to be listening to the audiobook version as told by the author herself. If no one has any questions I'll begin."
She looked around the room one more time. When none of us moved she turned to her computer, pressing a few buttons.
Her voice is powerful, only a few words in and it's already resonating in my soul.
"Hello. My name is Seely Gray, but some of you may know me as Metis..."
