I hadn’t expected Greyson to come to the house, especially after I had gone to great lengths to avoid him, such as hiding behind the couch like a child playing hide and seek to prevent a confrontation between us. But my efforts were wasted because it seemed the devil had followed my trail and come straight to my home to confront me.

I swallowed deeply as I met his intent gaze. His eyes were the prettiest I’d ever seen. But sadly, his beautiful eyes and handsome face had been the reason for my tears. If only I could command myself to stop loving him, then I would have been out of my misery long ago. But telling myself to stop my feelings for him was like telling a fish to climb a tree.

Distracted by his gaze, my thoughts scattered in the air. I forced myself to look away, but his eyes held mine captive. For a moment that seemed to last an eternity, I found myself lost in them.

“Can we talk?” he finally spoke. His voice was soft and almost gentle. It was the first time he had ever spoken to me in that tone.

Pulling myself together, I said “No” without hesitation. Even if I wanted to, I still couldn’t because I had to go to the hospital now.

“Why?” he asked. His facial expression was hard and unreadable. Despite my efforts to decipher his feelings, I failed to guess what he was feeling deep within. Grey had always been aloof, just as he was now every time he spoke to me. It made me feel as though he secretly hated me, but I couldn’t prove it. Each time we spoke, I felt a wedge stand between us. No matter what I did, I could never pass through the wall he built around himself.

“We have nothing to talk about,” I told him, mimicking his expression.

Something that resembled rage sparked in his eyes. “So what happened between us last night was nothing to you?” His fists turned into tight balls at his sides. Fury emanated from him, but despite that, he spoke in a surprisingly calm voice.

“Why would I care if you don’t?” I snapped, clenching my fists at my side as I fought his gaze.

“Don’t put words into my mouth, Lily,” Grey hissed. I swore I had never seen him this furious before. Seeing him this way made me hold my tongue—not because he scared me, but because it was the reasonable thing to do. “If I didn't care about last night, I wouldn’t be here on your doorstep standing like a fool.” He let the words out in what sounded like a growl.

Taken aback by his words, I stood there watching him like a fool, too startled to hear him admit he cared. It was the first time those words had emerged from Grey’s lips.

For the first time in my life, I wanted to jump into his arms and tell him how much I loved him. Suddenly, the thought of Natalia pregnant with his child lashed at me. Her revelation flashed back in my thoughts, and I felt as if I would die from the pain as I remembered her admission that her affair with him had been going on for years. The pleasant feeling in my chest vanished, and fury seethed inside me.

After fooling me for the past two years with his secret affair with Natalia, how could Grey have the courage to face me and pretend as if he cared?

With hard eyes, I looked at him again. “We have nothing to talk about, Grey. Please leave me alone,” I hissed.

Grey’s jaw tightened. “You are my wife. I have the right to talk to you.”

“The night you asked for a divorce, you stripped yourself of the right to be my husband!” Tears burned my eyes as I forced the words from my trembling lips. The unpleasant memories of the night he asked for a divorce still hurt me like hell. I would never forgive him for ruining our fifth wedding anniversary by asking for a divorce.

There’s no way on earth I will ever forgive him! I told myself.

Pulling myself together, I dried my cheeks with the back of my hand before giving him the coldest look I could muster—cold enough to freeze the burning depths of hell—while I whispered, “Go away,” in a tone that would make the three-headed dog, Cerberus, skitter away in fear.

“No,” he bit back stubbornly, his eyebrows knitted together. “We will talk.” He sputtered the words aloud. It was not a plea but an order. I knew at that moment that he wouldn't take no for an answer. He would carry me on his shoulders and haul me into his car if necessary just to talk to me. Knowing Grey, he would do exactly that.

“I don’t have the time to talk to you,” I told him as I locked the door behind me. “Mom is in the hospital, and I have to get there right now.” Walking past him, I rushed to where my car was parked while he trailed behind me.

“What happened to her?” Grey asked, and when I looked at his face, I saw worry in it.

Even if it felt as though a wedge stood between us, I knew Grey seriously cared about Mom. I even thought he cared for her more than he cared for me, but it didn't matter much to me.

“Lily, answer me.” He held both my shoulders to capture my attention, and his intense gray eyes pierced my own. “Did something bad happen to her?” he asked, but the words barely emerged from his lips. I noticed the look of fear in his eyes was the same expression that had haunted my face when I learned Mom was in the hospital.

“She passed out on the floor—” I replied, but I barely finished the words because he cut me off.

“Did she hit her head on the floor?” His worry clearly showed on his face.

I shook my head and replied, “She was lucky because Celine was there to catch her when she fell.”

Relief crossed his face. He heaved a sigh before letting his hands drop to his sides. The place where his palms had touched me on my shoulders still felt warm, and it reminded me of last night. Immediately, I pushed the memories away from my thoughts and climbed inside my car. But before I could move an inch, Grey caught my arm.

“I will go to the hospital.”
