Elliot had been roaming the castle that night. the night they found the mirror that is. it had been storming, Nova had fallen asleep hours before it even started, Otter was god knows where and Eli? they could not sleep and had gotten sick of staring at the roof. so, they had gotten out of bed, grabbed their boots and jacket and walked down the stairs and out of the common room.

they'd put their shoes on and walk up to the first floor. they had just been wandering aimlessly, hoping to tire themself out before going back to the common room to try and get some sleep before Nova woke up. Elliot had promised him to try and sleep a week prior.

Eli would wind up on the third floor. how they had managed to get here, they had no idea. they had surprisingly not run into anyone on their way from the dungeons to the third floor.

with a small sigh, they'd walk into the seemingly empty classroom at the end of the hallway. it had looked as though it was a forgotten about classroom. the doorknob was unpolished, the door had looked old and the desks and chairs that had been pressed against the walls where covered in dust. the one thing that had stood out amongst all the old, dusty furniture was a large mirror. it looked as good as new. there wasn't a spec of dust or a single cob-web on the frame or the glass.

Elliot would gently shut the classroom door behind them and approach the mirror, their boots kicking up dust as they softly thudded to the floor. they took a short moment to slow their walking and watch as the dust particles danced and flittered in the dim moonlight streaming in through the window.

they would close their eyes and listen to the low, distant rumbling of thunder and the now soft pitter-patter of rain on stained glass windows of the classroom.

when they opened their eyes and continued to walk towards the mirror, they would have a soft smile on their face and their breathing would be slower and deeper. Elliot would stop in front of the mirror and slowly sink to sit on the dusty floor. as they sat, more dust particles flew into the air as if they were awoken from a peaceful dream. Elliot would mouth a small 'sorry' to the room before looking into the mirror.

at first, Elliot would see themself. just them sitting on a dusty floor with legs crossed and a tired expression. and then something happened that Eli hadn't expected it to do. the image shown in the glass changed. only... it hadn't changed to anything they'd never seen before. the scene had changed to them and Nova laughing in the common room.

Elliot would giggle quietly to themself. the two of them had been laughing over some stupid joke that one of them had said. Elliot would watch as the scene played and then faded out to show them sitting on the floor again. by the time the scene had faded out, past Nova and past Eli had been crying laughing and clutching their sides.

the next scene that had played was one of the Christmas's they had both stayed at school. the two of them had been running around a large thick tree, throwing each other's gloves and beanies at each other in a joking manner. the scene had ended when the two of them were wearing mix-matched gloves and each other's beanies. again, the two of them would be laughing.

Elliot would watch as scene after scene played. each of them would be a memory of a day or a short moment they had shared with Nova. they would have felt their eyes fill with tears. it wasn't until the last scene that the tears had spilled over their cheeks. the last scene had been different to the rest of them. instead of a memory, it had been a scene from a not so far off future. Elliot didn't blink the whole time the scene had been shown, wanting to take in every detail. every speck, every misplaced hair, every freckle. everything.

Eli had sat on the floor of the classroom for a while after that, crying tears of joy. some of the kicked up dust had settled on their shoulders and head as if trying to hug them.

they would whisper a small thank you to the classroom as they shut the door once again behind them. they would make sure to focus on each memory that was still playing in their mind on the way back to the common room.

that was the night Elliot finally realised that they really did love Nova.
