Prophecy: Would bear two children, the first Athena, the second a son so powerful that he would overthrow Zeus

Most myths depict Athena as motherless, the Ancient Greeks believed the child came from the father and the mother played no part (other than birth)


Myth: 

Zeus tricked Metis into turning herself into a fly and swallowed her

Metis was already pregnant with Athena

Inside Zeus' stomach Metis created a helmet for Athena

Zeus was in so much pain that he asked Hephaestus to hit him in the head with an ax

Zeus' head opened and Athena jumped out, fully grown and clad in armor
