The War

War is a monster. With an unquenchable thirst for blood. A ravenous hunger for the deaths of those it covets. As its victims, we no nothing else.

You can't hide from it. You can't run from it. Once it has your sent, your doomed to either fight against it or die trying.

It has our sent, it knows our thoughts. Once it finds you, you are no longer free. Trapped in its embrace.

There is no 'typical' with war. There is no stereotype that encompasses its chaos.

If there were, I'm sure it would be a lot easier for those who suffer in its wake to understand what happened to them and their loved ones.

When my mother was killed while on her daily walk, I didn't understand.

When my father was torn from my arms, I didn't understand.

As I watch my pack be torn apart, mates leaving mates, to go and fight for our right to live on our land. I didn't understand.

As a last resort, before we are all struck down from the lives we covet, we are moving to the neighboring pack, while their warriors are sent here to guard our land as an extension of theirs.

Even as our Alpha explains, I don't understand.

I know why this war began. Some Alpha in the north decided his land wasn't enough for his people and decreed that if others wouldn't give them the land they claimed to need, they would take it.

Land they claimed they needed to house their young as they multiplied like rabbits. Land they claimed they needed to stretch the legs of their wolves, who hungered for our blood.

Land they claimed we did not need. Why would peaceful wolves need to run free? How could wolves who had never needed to learn how to fight, resist them when they had chosen what they wanted?

I know why they came for our land first. We border them to the south, we are the first pack to conquer in this direction. If they don't get through us, they go nowhere.

I know why we must leave our homes. Without the safety of the neighboring pack and its warriors, we won't survive another month.

I don't understand. Why has no one ended this war? Why has no one taken charge and brought this violent pack to their knees?

It seems so obvious to me. How to end this war, with few casualties. I suppose those on our side think with their humanity first and their survival instincts second. How else would they have allowed this war to go on for years, allowing the pack to gain territory and kill innocents.

The path seems straightforward to me. However, I'm not going to give it all away here in the first chapter. If you're going to learn my story, you'll experience it as I did, from the beginning.
