Adrian
[learning]
We have a while until dinner time, so I
sit with Lindsey in our room. She
is quiet for the longest time.
Suddenly, she decided it's
time to say something.
So, I guess you're
wondering why
I ended up
in here,
right?
I pause.
"Well, sort
of. I'm just kind
of curious, you know?
I can't be sure of why you
got in here. You can't be sure
of why I got in here, either, you
know? I think we aren't supposed
to talk about that in here, though." I
think about it for a moment and don't speak.
She smiles. You're a cutter, Adrian.
I gasp. ”How do you guess that?"
Easy. You see, there's a guy
In here besides just us.
He says he's seen
you do it. He
says it's in
your na-
ture
to.
"What
do you me-
an, there's a guy
in here besides us?"
He's a spirit, Adrian. A
ghost, just like every other
spirit that haunts this place.
I can totally see them, you kno-
w. The living and the dead. At the
same time. It's a fucking awesome sight.
And then it totally hit me, like a truck barreling
down the road, aimed at a poor, defenseless
deer. It hit me, hard. It was difficult to un-
derstand it at first, though. I almost di-
dn't notice it. It was so…subtle, I gu-
ess. I wish I had realized it soon-
er. There had been somethi-
ng wrong with Lindsey. I
realized. She was sim-
ply schizophrenic.
