CHAPTER 1 - Y/N'S POV
Here I was... all alone in the delivery room. I was gonna deliver my child, my baby girl, all alone. My husband, the love of my life died a week ago in a freak car accident. He was on his way to meet me for my OBGYN appointment, but this speeding car came out of nowhere and hit the driver's side full force. Now I had to go through labor all on my own and my little girl would never meet her father. My thoughts were interrupted when the monitor near me started beeping weirdly. A nearby nurse heard it and came rushing to my room. She looked at the monitor and I could see something was wrong.
"What's wrong?", I asked.
"Your baby is- I need to call Dr. Cameron."
The nurse ran out to get Dr. Cameron, who apparently was nearby cause they came back a minute later. He immediately went to my monitor to check what was wrong. Again, I could see the worried look.
"What's wrong?"
"Your baby- I-"
"Just tell me what's wrong!"
"There's no heartbeat. Your baby is dead, but we still have to deliver it. I'm gonna go schedule an OR. My sympathies for your loss."
And that's when my whole world came crumbling down. I didn't want to believe it, I couldn't believe it. The doctor just told me my baby girl is dead. It can't be possible.
"Is this some kind of joke? This can't be possible... I just lost my husband last week, I can't lose my daughter either."
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Y/LN, but unfortunately it's true. Once we deliver her, we'll let you hold at least once before you say goodbye. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna book the OR while Nurse Wilson preps you."
All I could do was cry. My life was over. I had absolutely no hope. I couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. The nurse sat on my bed and held me while I cried.
DR. CAMERON'S POV
I was closing Mrs. Y/LN up after delivering her stillborn daughter when Nurse Wilson came into the OR.
"Dr. Cameron, your other patient is going into active labor. We need you now."
"Ok, I'll be right there. Dr. Bailey, can you finish here and then make sure Mrs. Y/LN has a moment with her daughter?"
"Yes I can ,sir."
"Thank you."
I removed my disposable apron and made my way to my patient's room. I helped deliver her baby, another baby girl, but she collapsed right after, and even though we did our best efforts to bring her back, she didn't make it. What a tragic morning did I have. First, a daughterless mother and now a motherless daughter. And then an idea hit me.
"Wilson, Ms. Smith came here all alone, didn't she? She was a single mother, right?"
"Yes... "
"I think I have an idea. Once you are done checking the baby's APGAR score, bring her to me. I'll be in Mrs. Y/LN's room."
"Mrs. Y/LN's room?"
"Yes."
"Okay..."
I made my way to Mrs. Y/LN's room and was greeted with the most heartbreaking scene. She was holding her daughter and crying. I slowly made my way to her bed.
"Mrs. Y/LN, I'm sorry, but it's time for us to take your daughter."
"No! Nobody is gonna take my daughter away from me. No!"
"I'm sorry, but we have to... it's procedure. Please."
Just as I was talking, Nurse Wilson comes into the room with the Smith baby in her arms. I turn to Mrs. Y/LN to tell her my idea.
"Y/N, I can't imagine what you just went through, but I may have found a way to mitigate your pain. Yours and the one of another baby."
I get the baby from Wilson's arm and go back to Mrs. Y/LN.
"Y/N, this little baby girl's mother just died in childbirth. She's all alone now. I know she will never replace your daughter, but maybe she can help."
"What are you saying? Are you suggesting I raise this baby as my own?"
"Yes... I'm not forcing you to do it and I apologize if it seems too much, but I assure you I have only good intentions."
"I... I need one last moment alone with my daughter to think about it."
"We'll be right outside. Call us when you're ready."
Y/N'S POV
The doctor and nurse left my room and I looked down at my daughter.
"Hey, Charlotte, mommy is so sad she's not going to be able to hold you much longer or to watch you grow, but I want you to know that me and your father love you very much. We always will."
I held her even closer to my chest.
"Charlie, you will always be my daughter, but there's this little baby girl that just lost her mamma... I have the opportunity to help her. She will never replace you, but she could help ease my pain. You could even help soothe her mamma's pain up in Heaven. I will always love you, my little Charlotte Elizabeth, so I thought I could keep the name this little girl's mamma chose and give her your middle name so I can have a piece of you with her. I hope you understand my decision and know how much I love you. Goodbye, my love. Goodbye, Charlotte Elizabeth. Say hi to your papa for me."
I kissed my daughter one last time and called the doctor. He came in and I asked him if I could have five minutes alone before meeting this baby girl. He said yes and delicately took my daughter from my arms. I caressed her face one last time before he left the room. As soon as the door shut, I started crying again. I cried and cried and cried. I would never see or hold my daughter again. I would never see her grow, graduate or get married... and it hurt a lot. But now I had a chance to start again. I had a chance to be a mother to this baby girl. I had the chance to love this baby. I had the chance to have a daughter again. I took a deep breath and called the doctor again. Nurse Wilson came in first, followed by Dr. Cameron holding a baby. He slowly made his way to my bed and I could finally see this little girl's face. She was adorable, perfect... and she was mine now.
"Y/N, would you like to hold her?"
"Y-Yes."
I opened my arms and he put the baby in them. It was really happening.
"Hi, baby girl, how are you? I know we both had a very tough day, but I'm here for you now. You don't have to worry about anything anymore.", I said as I caressed her cheek.
"Y/N, she hasn't been fed yet... would you like to try it?"
"I can?"
"Of course! You're full of milk and this baby needs some."
"Then sure, I'll feed her."
I smiled and opened my hospital gown. I held my very engorged breast and gently caressed the baby's mouth with it until she opened it. She started sucking my nipple immediately, clearly very hungry. I giggled at the new feeling and smiled at the sight. I continued breastfeeding her, observing her perfect little hand softly touching my breast. A few minutes later, I was done. I gently unlatched her from my breast and I spread a few drops of colostrum on my nipple cause I was told it helped with the healing. I put my heavy breast back inside my hospital gown. I definitely wasn't used to having breasts this engorged and big. But they were like this in order for me to feed my precious child, so I didn't mind. I softly burped her and looked back at the doctor.
"Did she have a name?", I asked.
"Yes, her mother said it was Jasmine Grace."
"It's a beautiful name. I'm going to keep her first name, but change her middle name to honor my daughter. So I present to you my daughter Jasmine Elizabeth."
Both the doctor and nurse smiled and I knew everything was gonna be ok.
