The following week brought a quiet change. Nothing big or dramatic—just a shift in how Jiwon and Jungwon carried themselves around each other. There were no official labels, no public declarations, but there was something undeniably different now. A closeness that didn’t need to be explained.
They still texted until late at night, shared snacks between classes, and stole moments between crowds in the hallway. But there was something simmering beneath the surface. Like they were standing on the edge of something more.
And of course, the others noticed.
“You’re unusually quiet,” Jiwon said, nudging Jungwon’s side as they walked out to the courtyard after lunch. “You didn’t even roast Jake once today. Are you okay?”
Jungwon chuckled, eyes on the ground. “I’m fine. Just… thinking.”
“Thinking?” she repeated, curious. “About?”
He glanced at her from the corner of his eye. “You.”
Jiwon blinked, caught off guard. “Me?”
“Yeah.” He looked away quickly, ears turning pink. “I mean, everything’s been… good lately. Really good. But I keep wondering if I’m doing enough. If I’m making you feel… safe. Comfortable.”
Jiwon slowed her steps, her expression softening. “Jungwon…”
He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. “I know I messed up before. Not telling you the truth about the messages. And I know we’re better now, but sometimes I just wonder if there’s still a part of you that doesn’t trust me the same.”
Jiwon stopped walking altogether, turning to face him. “Hey.”
He looked at her, surprised by the sudden seriousness in her voice.
“You’re right. I did feel hurt when I found out. But I also remember how hard you tried after that. You didn’t run away or make excuses. You stayed. And more than anything, that’s what I needed.”
Jungwon looked down, guilt still lingering behind his quiet eyes. “It still doesn’t feel like enough.”
Jiwon stepped closer, her voice gentler now. “Then let’s not focus on what’s enough. Let’s just… keep going. Together.”
Jungwon’s heart thudded in his chest. The way she said together felt like a promise. Not the flashy, dramatic kind. The kind that grows slowly, like roots settling into the earth.
They stood there in silence for a moment, letting the breeze dance around them. Then—
“Jungwon!”
Heeseung’s voice cut through the courtyard like a sharp bell.
The two turned just in time to see the whole group approaching: Heeseung, Jake, Jay, Sunghoon, Sunoo, Ni-ki—all grinning like mischievous devils.
“Oh no,” Jiwon whispered, stepping slightly behind Jungwon like she already knew what was coming.
“Fancy seeing you here,” Jay said dramatically, slinging an arm around Jungwon’s shoulder.
Jake gave a playful wave. “Hi, Jiwon! We’re not interrupting anything too romantic, are we?”
Jiwon rolled her eyes, cheeks warm. “You guys have the worst timing.”
“No, no. Best timing,” Sunoo said brightly, grinning at the way Jungwon awkwardly stood there, torn between embarrassment and amusement.
Ni-ki leaned in. “We just wanted to check if our soft boy here finally confessed his undying love.”
“Oh my god,” Jungwon muttered, burying his face in his hands again.
Jay smirked. “Let me guess—he said something poetic like, ‘Your eyes shine brighter than my LED keyboard.’”
Sunghoon let out a laugh. “Or ‘Your presence is smoother than my skating moves.’”
Jiwon laughed despite herself, watching as Jungwon swatted half-heartedly at his friends, who were all clearly enjoying the moment a little too much.
Heeseung grinned and turned to her. “You’re good for him, you know?”
Jiwon blinked, caught off guard. “Huh?”
Heeseung shrugged. “He’s been smiling more. Talking more. Even when we tease him to death.”
Jiwon’s smile softened as she glanced at Jungwon, who was now glaring at Jay while Ni-ki tried to braid a tiny section of his hair.
“I think he’s good for me too,” she said quietly.
Heeseung just smiled and gave her a knowing nod. “Then don’t let the teasing scare you off. It’s how we say we love him.”
Just then, Jungwon broke away from the chaos, walking back to Jiwon, cheeks red but eyes shining.
“Sorry,” he muttered, brushing a hand through his hair. “They don’t know how to shut up.”
Jiwon smiled. “I like it. They make you more… you.”
He gave her a soft look, the kind that made her heart stutter. “And you make me feel like that’s enough.”
And just like that, the teasing didn’t matter anymore. Not when the space between them was finally full of honesty, trust… and something slowly becoming love.
