I watched with envy as my two best friends walked along the river hand in hand, leaving me trailing behind them like a lost puppy.

I remembered just a few months before when we had all just been friends, I had been best friends with Vicky since year one when she’d stormed in wearing scarlet red boots a little black skirt and a red top. Everyone stared at her as she scanned the room with her big blue eyes, her golden curls were in pigtails. She was even beautiful at six years old.

And out of all the people in the room, it was me she chose to be her friend and we’d stayed best friends ever since. We met Will in year seven when Vicky accidentally- on purpose flicked paint all over his work in art and then the three of us started flicking paint at each other, we got in heaps of trouble and were band from painting for the rest of the term. I started to get a crush on Will in year eight , its been three years now. Vicky had never had a crush on him, she just decided she needed a new boyfriend and that was it, she snapped Will up in seconds. I didn’t know he liked her that way, he usually told me everything.

I hate feeling this way about my two friends, I should be happy for them but I cant help feeling a stabbing pain crash through my heart as I watched them walking, laughing together. Vicky reached up and moved some of Wills dark hair out of his eyes and kissed him. I wanted to cry, it was as if I was invisible, I bet if I was just to fall into the river now and disappear for good they wouldn’t even notice. I was distracted from my thought when I felt a sudden vibration on my leg, it was a phone in my pocket. I took it out it was Vicky’s.

“ Hey Vic, some ones ringing you” I called to her. She answered, we waited.

“shit Iv got to go guys, ill see you tomorrow” she said giving Will a kiss and me a hug then she left us alone together by the river. Id have been thrilled if he’d have been single, I could never compete with Vicky. I’m not ugly but she is the most beautiful girl in our year and she’s always been very popular. Especially with the boys. I walked a step behind will thinking of something to say.

“so, when will we be hearing wedding bells?” I joked.

“eh?” he said looking confused

“you and Vic, duh!” I said poking him in the side, was that classed as flirting? That is definitely not something I should be doing, I look at Will, a dark shadow fell across his face, which was weird because there was nothing between him and the blazing sun that would create a shadow. He looks at me, his gaze is on mine.

“Rose. Can I tell you something?” he asks looking deep into my eyes.

“of course you can” I say staring back at him. He looks away kicking a stone, it rolls down the grass and splashes into the river.

“I ….” he starts to say, then he looks back at me “ it doesn’t matter” he shrugs smiling brightly, the shadow disappeared. What ever it was he was going to say, cant have been that important. He sits down on the grassy bank and grabbed my hand to pull me down with him, if he felt what I did, which was electric shocks racing up my arm at his touch. He didn’t let on. We sat for a while saying nothing, throwing stones into the cool water.

Then Will gets up , wiping his hands on his jeans then helps me up, my legs turn to jelly at his touch and I fall into him “whoa” he laughs grabbing my waist to steady me. We stand there, him holding me. I want to just freeze time and stay in that moment forever but a minuet later he lets go, “ill walk you home, ok?” he asks looking into my face.

“sure” I say smiling at him.

We walk back along the grassy path, there were some roses along the fence, blood red. Will walks over and picks one out of the ground then gives it to me
