I've been sitting on the ground for hours, I'm cold and hungry but I'm not about to complain. I know I present myself at the annoying rich kid sometimes, but I'm not all like that. Although, it doesn't matter. No one needs to hear what I have to say, my whole life I let everyone know how rich my family is. But, I never tell anyone how absent they are. The only people I talk to at my house are the maids. Who am I to complain though, some kids would do anything to be me. Anyways, I get up, and walk towards Darius. He's been staring at the sky for hours now. Before reaching him I stop, and look up at the sky. I think of Ben and immediately shake my head. He can't be dead, he just can't. But, how would he be alive, it was close to impossible. It all felt like my fault, I could've- no I should've helped Darius. But I didn't, I froze, I'm not a tough guy, I'm a fake. Anyways it doesn't matter, I keep making my way towards Darius and tap him on the shoulder, he looks at me but doesn't speak.
"We haven't eaten anything actually filling in a while, we've got to find something," I plead.
"I know, I know, um maybe there's some fruit bushes in the forests?" Darius wondered.
I nod my head and motion him to follow me in the woods. We ran into the girls, but they didn't hear us. Hearing crying noises I turn away, and keep walking. Darius lingers behind them for a second, and backs away quietly following me. Each time we took a step, leaves and sticks would crunch, I so badly wanted to sit and rest again, but we needed something. I walk into a bush, with black berries all around.
"Darius," I say while nudging his arm. He smiled a little and we began to pick them. It wouldn't fill us up completely, but it was enough for a good snack. We picked as much as we could that would fit in our palms. Holding them carefully we walked back to where we saw the girls. They still were sitting on the log, but instead of crying this time they were laughing. How could they laugh when we lost Ben, I thought to myself. I don't even know why I care so much, like we agreed we weren't friends.
"Hey guys," Darius called, while walking towards them. I walk over to and we reveal them the berries.
"Are these safe?" Yaz queried. I totally didn't even think about that.
"Yeah, don't worry, black berries are always safe," Darius announced. The girls each grabbed berries, and then Darius and I began eating what was left. They were good and refreshing, and honestly filled up a bit of my hunger. The sky was completely dark by now, the only source of light were the stars. Darius and I on the ground, and the girls on the log, we were silent for a few minutes.
"Guys where are we going to sleep, we can't go back to, you know," Brooklyn pondered.
"Those big steel containers behind the dock," Sammy suggested.
"I can't believe we have to sleep in storage containers," Brooklyn complained.
"Better than sleeping on sand and dirt," Darius replied.
"Whatever," Yaz mumbled.
I stayed silent, there's no point in saying anything. Brooklyn got up and we all followed her to the containers. Sammy put her hand on the biggest one and flinched. It was probably too cold.
"Darius help me open it up," I advised. I put both my hands on the metal rod on the left, Darius did the same with the one on the right. We pulled as hard as we could, and the doors slowly opened up. We pulled back once more and it fully opened. Inside were blankets and pillows. Hard to believe I know.
"Well we're lucky, they were probably gonna take those to where we were staying, before yeah I don't have to explain," Darius said while chuckling.
"This is a stretch but what if the other container has snacks or candy, I mean there was a lot in our rooms," Sammy speculated. Yaz, nodded her head, and kept touching her ankle. I could tell how much pain she was in. I began walking to the next container and Darius followed behind. We repeated what we did last time, and we looked at eachother with huge grins.
"Guys come here," Darius beamed. Inside, were candy in big bags, beside empty jars. There were chips, crackers, and small cereal boxes. Beside them were packs of juice boxes. Brooklyn rushed and grabbed a small pack of gummy candy. SHe ripped them open fast and plopped them into her mouth. She grabbed one more and we all laughed, we each grabbed 0our own two snacks and headed back to the big container. Stepping inside, I brought the doors close enough to where it wasn't fully open or fully closed. We all set up our pillows and blankets and laid. Beside me was Darius on one side and Brooklyn on the other. On the next side Yaz and Sammy laid together. I turned to the right of me and Darius was already fast asleep.
"Night guys," Brooklyn said.
"Night," the rest of us except Darius replied. For some reason, I was scared, I pushed the fears away and closed my eyes.
