When they moved in a week ago, Amelia never imagined that she would meet her new neighbor the way her brother and she did that Monday afternoon. Her mind was mostly filled with dance, her band or how in the hell she was going to deal with her older brother Miguel. If someone were to tell her that she was to meet her new karate teacher that day, someone who was not only like a father figure she never had but also someone who got paid to kick her ass on a weekly basis, she would tell them to check themselves into a psych ward immediately.
That afternoon, their abuela sent them to go grab the mail, using the keys to their new apartment while she was watching her telenovela and their mother was off on another grueling shift at the Hospital. Which is where Amelia and Miguel were having their new school argument for the 3rd time this past week.
Amelia leaned against their mailbox right outside of their apartment, waving her hands in the air, sighing, "Look bro I'm just saying that between the both of us, you're more likely to get your ass kicked without a group of friends. You need to do something! This is a new school, a new chance. Just try something, please!"
Miguel grabs the mail from inside the box then glances down at her, giving her a pointed look. "You say that as my younger sister and the youngest person in our grade. You can't really be talking sis. And just because you're on the dance team doesn't mean anything," He points out.
Amelia throws her hands up in the air while exclaiming, "¡Ah dios mío! You make me crazy!"
Before Miguel had a chance to retort, the sound of a door slamming rings through the air. Both siblings watch as their next door neighbor walks out of his apartment and towards his car.
Amelia nods her head in the direction of the older man asking, "Didn't mama want to ask him about the water?"
Miguel nods his head at his sister then quickly walks over to the older man, leaving his sister to run behind him in hopes of catching up. He calls out, "Hey I'm Miguel and this is my little sister Amelia. My family and I just moved into 109."
The older man looks between the two kids as if they created some tear in the space time continuum by talking to him and says exasperatedly, " Great. More immigrants."
It was generally safe to say that Amelia definitely didn't like this man. The 5 foot nothing girl takes a step in front of her brother, glaring at the man while correcting him, "Actually we're from Riverside."
The older man gives her a once over, clearly not expecting that type of behavior from her, then scoffs and keeps walking with a trash bag in hand until he gets to the garbage bins.
Amelia is astonished by the sheer amount of rudeness coming from her neighbor. She would understand completely if they hadn't just moved in. There was no reason for him to dislike them this much. Now she knew for certain that she didn't just dislike him, no she loathed this man.
Miguel glances between the older man and his little sister and steps out to her side when he tries to defuse the situation. He continued, "But anyways, I was just wondering if you were having trouble with your water pressure, 'cause I know our sink is being a little weird right now and..."
Miguel interrupts himself suddenly as the older man roughly throws the bag in, not caring which type of trash goes where. The boy exclaims, "Oh! Bottles go in the blue bins," gesturing towards the different trash cans.
The older man glares at the boy while Amelia facepalms her forehead. "Why is my brother such a nerd? I love him but do I have to do everything myself," Amelia thought to herself.
The girl looked at the man in embarrassment and apologized, "Sorry about him sir, he doesn't know when to shut up. Look we just wanted to know if you were having the same problems as us."
The older man nods to no one in particular and sighs in annoyance, "Listen pequenos, I've lived in this shithole for over ten years. The pipe's don't work. The fountain's full of piss. The only good thing here is that I don't have to talk to anybody. So nice knowing you two."
He picks up his tool box and walks away from the siblings. The pair look at each other in curiosity, Amelia's is more mocking while Miguel's is genuine.
Miguel looks away from his sister and calls out, "Ok well... Have a nice day...I guess."
The old man's car door squeaks back, almost as a reply. Amelia flips off her new neighbor and she calls out, "Yeah have a nice day asshole!" The girl scoffs to her brother, "Man our neighbor is such a dick!"
Miguel dismisses the entire thing and chuckles at his sister, "Yeah it's no biggie though. Let's just go back inside."
Amelia rolls her eyes at her brother naivety and asks sarcastically, "Yeah okay. What was that anyways?" She imitates her older brother in a teasing manner, "Bottles go in the blue bins-"
Miguel cuts her off by shoving her away from him while laughing, "Shut up Lia! It's a true fact! He's gonna help destroy the planet!"
Amelia grins at her brother and walks back closer to him. In an effort to tease him again, she mocks, "He's going to help destroy the planet!" She chuckles, using her normal voice, "I'm telling you as your little sister... You're an idiot."
The teen smirks at her brother with a loving gleam of happiness in her eyes. She would never be able to understand how anyone could dislike her brother. He was just too sweet.
Miguel shakes his sister out of her little bubble as he wraps an arm around her shoulders as an attempt to squeeze her too tight. Failed attempt is more accurate.
The weak attempt at strength causes the pair of siblings to laugh together and push each other around until they get back inside their apartment, laughing like children the entire way home.
